hi! can anyone help me? i have been showing my luvly dales pony major very successfully ( dales are hard to resist!) at local shows this year, but am constantly baffled by what is the correct outfit/tack to use. i thought i should be in tweed jacket, canary jods etc. for mountain and moorland classes, but people seem to turn up in all sorts and the judges make no comment. even at hoys (er, i was only watching!) i saw competitors in navy show jackets with stocks. i am so confused! i hope to move on to bigger competitions next year and don't want to waste my time (and money) getting the wrong stuff. help me please!....

Hi Nike, welcome to the board. You are correct in M&M classes ridden (daytime classes) you should wear tweed jacket (typically brown or green or blue but you get them with a huge variety of overchecks too), with a matching tie. Canary/beige jodphurs, long boots (black or brown, typically black). Brown gloves, brown cane. Navy blue hat with flesh coloured straps is the general rule of thumb but you do get some variety with people wearing brown hats to match very brown tweeds, different coloured straps etc. You can't go wrong with a navy velvet though. I am wondering if you saw the evening performance at HOYS this year? I believe all bar the Atherden lads wore evening wear which is a navy show jackets and stock but its not very common you'll wear one and it literally is for evening/under the spotlight events at championship shows. Tack is a working bridle so no flashy bits or bobs on it, hunter weight leather typically and mainly with flat browband or noseband. I say mainly as there will always be people that do different, but thats what the majority wear. This is what i wear, its not perfect as I detest wearing gloves (although I am training myself this winter!) but i like what I wear and don't believe it to be out of place in the ring and inhand which shows that my tie (orange stripe) matches the orange overcheck of my tweed. I have a reasonably "loud" overchecked tweed, there are far louder tweeds but for M&M's I wouldn't want to go much louder. However, apart from that you world is your oyster when it comes to tweeds.
