My vet came today to give Quest a checking over and take some more blood samples because he has completed his first 3 months on Pergolide. So far so good! He's not had any laminitis episodes since being on the Pergolide and is moving very well. I suppose I don't notice differences because I see him every day but the vet said he was looking fantastic, gleaming with health! The one thing I have noticed is that his temperature regulation seems to have improved. I can actually rug him in his medium weight rugs and last year I couldn't rug him at all as he sweated so much even in the cold. We've not got to the dangerous part of the year for him (January/February/March) but fingers crossed he will be fine now. Mind you, the frosty grass is a worry and I'm not risking him out much at the moment.

That's great news Pam, and a huge relief for you! Hope Quest continues as he is and doesn't give you any more cause for worry!

Just noticed this thread Pam. So glad that Quest has responded well to the pergolide. It can be such a godsend for them. Topaz too has been much less sweaty & her hair more normal so I didn't have to clip her in August. But the very best part is being able to keep the laminitis at bay. Topaz has been on pergolide for 4, almost 5 years now and (touch wood) she's not had a laminic episode in over 2 years. She can gallop up from the back pasture with Knight and keep right up with him now. Fingers & hooves crossed that Quest will continue to do well with it and be laminitis free.

That's very encouraging to hear Nancy. I'm so glad Topaz is doing well and able to enjoy life to the full again and I hope it will be the same for Quest. So far so good. I have been letting him out on the frosty grass but in hoof boots to protect his feet when the ground is hard and rutted. No sign of diahroea which is always a precurser to laminitis with him. Fingers crossed it continues.......

Really sorry to hear about your lad. I know from experience how worrying and upsetting it is to watch and care for them through a laminitis episode. Has your lad got other symptoms of Cushings or Insulin Resistance? Quest had frequent laminitis bouts triggered by all soprts of wierd things. Other symptoms were drinking a lot, difficulty regulating body temperature, trouble losing winter coat and general chnge in body shape. All these things built up very gradually over a number of years. I had him blood tested a few times and finally, his insulin levels made the vet decide to try him on Pergolide. So far, so good. It is probably worth you getting your lad blood tested. The initial basic tests are not expensive. Some vets are happy to put the horses on Pergolide without tests if the symptoms are fairly obvious. As for the costs, I'm getting my pergolide through the vet at the moment and aren't paying anything near as much as the H&H thread says. However, if the charges do go up I will look into getting it from a human pharmacy - thanks for the tip!

Haven't read the link but my vet has quoted £43/3 months for Choc on pergolide. She's 16hh TBxID, 200 inches round! Neded to read the weight! LOL!

Strangely enough I priced this up for someone yesterday!!! 100 x pergolide 250mcg tablets worked out at around £20 from where I work. Pretty sure quantity was 100 but can double check. Person who asked was paying double that for 60 tabs.
