Mickey joined me and started his ownership of me 11 years ago in july. I'd looked at a few horses, having bought Dusty (11 years ago tomorrow) who turned out to be too small and became my sister's pony. we travelled miles and found him less than 5 miles from home.
He was a fat, hairy bone idle cob but I loved him straight away. I tried him over the A1 bridge, alongside the A1 with just a small fence between us, past combined harvesters and he looked after me impeccibly.
We spent many years hacking round the woods not far from his last home- on numerous occasions taking a detour at speed via a track not big enough for us both as he knew it was the fastest way home.
He also couldn't see the point in jumping- numerous sundays were spent practising. I was so determined to do the christmas show and do it we did- we stopped at every fence, had 3 people running round with us helping- nearly running one over. Over the years he improved- his final ridden summer we jumped many a clear round, always laughed at by YO was his style- he always cleared them, but never left a cm.
He taught many of YM's horses the art of hacking out- babysitting and was often borrow by people to get a little confidence out hacking- although on a field he cantered regardless, never fast but would he stop?!
He was retired a few years back due to arthritis and had gone downhill rapidly lameness wise over the last 7/8 weeks. he was still his happy cheeky self making it an even harder decision.
He was PTS this morning, not only have I lost my horse but Ive lost my best friend.
He spent an hour out in his field 1st, with his old best friend grazing alongside in the adjoining padddock. Candy has her best friends in field but chose to ignore them this morning. I'm sure she knew.
Run free Mickey.
