Hi Debbie, the foam has been developed by Knox and they say that the polyurethane foam will not break down even with a heavy impact, (aeroplane wings are made from this wonderful material also used in construction industry) so it will not need to be replaced. We have examined a b p that was in a really serious fall and it suffered no damage. It has been explained to me that other foams in other brands of body protector, are full of air bubbles which will burst with impacts and so protection is progressively reduced which is why BETA reccommend that other b p's are replaced every 4 years - not a long time for an expensive enough item.
However our foam works entirely differently on impacts - the foam actually hardens when hit, what actually happens on the inside is multiple particles of foam rush to the pressure point (sort of bulking up at the point of impact) then they relax and return to the normal consistency all because it has a"memory". this really means that it is protecting more. Our foam is moulded (it holds a shape) all because the foam forms a skin, no other foam in any other equestrian body protector is moulded, none have a skin and like tired elastic bands or sponges they will "dose" - ours will not. So really the Kan body protector is at least a 10 year purchase, probably more. I do need to point out that the cover is just like a garment and will wear but this can be easily replaced at a cost of about £40 (this might be less in time).
the amount of foam in our garment is greater than in other brands and covers more of the body including more of the coccyx, because every edge is tapered away so that there are no blunt edges around the neck, armholes, base of back and because this all gets thinner the safety standard does not count this extra bit. we have full overlaps at the sides which the rider cannot reduce so the ribs are never vulnerable with incorrect adjustment and a retailer cannot sell an individual the wrong size, which is so important.
Our garment is heavier than other brands ours weighs 2.3kgs compared to about 1.9kgs depending, but ours is weightless when worn and if you think about it, you dont get good protection from lightweight materials. Actually the feeling of security that you get when wearing this is fantastic and it makes the rider a little more brave and able to ride with more committment.
the moulded shape is hightly supportive and will actually make the rider sit in a better position.
I could go on but you will probably have got tired reading this - much longer than i intended - sorry.
Any more q's please ask!
