It's now got hot enough that Tilly sweats up every time we ride. A half hour walk hack would just be sweaty saddle/girth, but any more and she's sweaty all over. Today was an hour lesson in mostly trot or canter and she was really sweaty all over. She probably does that level of work two or three times a week. She's always sweaty enough to need a good wash off, rather than just leaving it to brush off later...
At what point would you start with the electrolytes?
Part of me says - "Don't be ridiculous it's only a bit of sweat - she's not doing endurance or eventing!" but then part of me says - "Well it's only electrolytes - she'll pee out any she doesn't need."
I always use electrolytes rather than just plain salt, so it doesn't matter so much if she's getting a bit too many it won't completely unbalance her salt levels.
What do you all think?

Alfie used to have electrolytes because he was so sweaty in summer. If she's regularly sweating all over enough to be washed off then she will be losing salts, so it won't do any harm to give her some electrolytes.

I felt the same as you, Olivia, but I'm giving Harvey electrolytes daily now as he sweats a lot and is in hard work. If they need swilling off regularly they must be losing salts.

We`are giving ours electrolytes daily and have been doing for a while. The fit ones work hard, but in this weather, even the ones in v light work are losing salts via sweating.

Thanks guys - I'll get some electrolytes to start her on. I don't think she's working as hard as either Harvey or Jacqui's guys, but she's not as fit as them either Cheers Olivia

I would give her some too! We feed them to ours when they are working hard, pre and post shows too.

That's really very interesting thanks for the articles. Will def get something this weekend. Just got to decide if plain salt would suffice, or if I'm better off with proper electrolytes. I think if I was able to give her a salt lick I'd go with that, but as I can't I'll just use a low does of electrolytes every day.
Many thanks
Olivia

I always give 2 buckets - plain water and electrolyte - I have seen a horse keel over at an endurance event through having too much electrolyte and his natural homeostatic balance messed up.
I also feed plain cooking salt to Harley when he is competing at 20 miles or above, he gets up to a 30ml scoop (2 tablespoons) in his feed depending on feed levels.

That's what worries me about giving electrolytes. How much is too much and how do I know whether Harvey needs them even though he sweats a lot. So I'm giving them at low levels daily through the summer and reccommended levels when working extra hard or competing.

I add it to the feed, I know they get it that way as they will do anything for something in a bucket

I go for the water buckets! Theory being that if he has worked hard enough to work up a sweat and need electrolytes/rehydration he will be drinking.
He varies a lot as to which one he chooses, and it doesn't always relate to the level of work, heat of the day etc.

Sparky hasn't been a very well boy and i will get to that in another thread. Anyhow, the out come is the vet said, she feeds all her horses with plain table salt every day of the year. Keeps them drinking plenty of water and flushed through.
She recommended that i feed my boy with salt as well as leaving a salt lick so if he feels he needs more he can. Table spoon.
