Good luck with the lambing Anna - my maiden goats all kidded easily as they all had singletons and none were overly big. It was a big relief because I certainly knew more about foaling than ovine things! Who has the tiniest hands?

Well we are now in to 2010 and we have foals due this year What are your approximate foaling dates?? Are you getting excited or nervous about it all yet??? Our first one is due from 8th to 18th March, I have to work on 330 days as all of ours that have had foals go about 330 but I have added the extra 10 days on anyway! I am very nervous just because it is such an early foal, an earlier one than we have ever had. Who has one due earlier or around the same time?

My two are due on 14th and 17th April (if you count 340 days). They are both experienced mums and both went exactly 340 days last time round although Lass showed signs much earlier so we still put ourselves through 2 whole weeks of exhausting foal-watch I wouldn't worry about the foal being born early in the season Barbara. Celt was born in February and nature did the trick and provided her with a vast amount of extra fur. I found it fascinating and would love to know the science behind it - ie. at what point does the fur-making gene respond to the external temperature and kick in? Obviously there wasn't the Spring grass that early, so we had to feed Gem a little more than usual and Celt was stabled at night for a few weeks longer than we normally do. Looking forward to the 2010 babies. We shall have to start a 2010 list

We only have Peigi in foal this year, all of the other ladies are having a year off - perhaps more if the economic climate doesn't improve!
After she slipped her foal last year, I decided she needed a job to do, so put her in with Rory, our rising 3 year old colt to teach him his manners and how to behave around a lady.
Well, they both did a good job and it's a Rory foal that Peigi is expecting. My best guess is towards the end of March, we'll just have to keep a careful eye on her.
Hope Rory enjoyed his interlude with Peg, he won't be having any more as he was cut in the autumn. Just the way it is with colts, they can look so promising and you give them every chance, but some ugly ducklings just grow into ugly ducks! (Actually, he isn't ugly, he's lovely and will make a super ride/drive, just doesn't have the stallion spark - something I can't explain, but know when I see).

At least you gave him the chance to grow on and see how he turned out. So many colts never get the chance, and then later you think what lovely babies they would have had. It'll be interesting to see Peigi's baby ...all the babies in fact. I'm looking forwards to spring

I have just been brushing Beau's tail tonight, we have 9 ponies stabled at night at the moment and so I try and do a mane or a tail or both most nights Beau is due in March and tonight I could feel her foal moving around, it was so active and so beautiful to feel it.

Well, a little update from me because Victoria is 320 days tomorrow. We will be evicting Delight from the biggest (foaling) box Delight is only in there because she is the biggest pony here and all of the other stables are in use, so tomorrow power washer and disinfectant at the ready and a swop around! The cctv is set up and working, my goodness I was awake half of last night watching Delight in her stable and she is not in foal , flat out, eating hay, standing looking out, back down again and so it went on, OH is sick already Victoria looks like her belly has dropped right down, although no udder as such yet but as this will be her 3rd foal I don't want to take any chances. So I guess from tomorrow we will be on foal watch for a while, the other two mares are due end of March. Fingers crossed please because I just want healthy foals and of course healthy mares, I am not bothered about anything else
