As you know I have 4track and loved it.
not much difference in MPG when towing on longish journeys to about town - I reckon 28 to the gallon.
Mine is a 1996 Fieldman model and brother reckons its worth about £600, there are plenty of good ones about how much do you want to spend? My friends have one, I think its a T reg that is fab condition (they might sell it)
Even tho they are fairly 'agricultural' I did not mind that ;D
p.s. my brother has a land rover 110 for sale if you are a glutton for punishment!!

I use my fourtrak for everyday use as well as towing, mine is the 2 seater one. It's a 17 mile journey to work and it manages about 32 to the gallon if I stick below 65. I love it - loads of space in the back for when I go shopping etc.
It is 12 years old, going on 13, done 160,000 miles and the main problem it has is rust. The engine (touch wood touch wood) is still good and everything else mechanical is fine too. It looks a heap but I know I can leave it anywhere and no-one will touch it! Tax is just over £100 for 6 months I think and won't go up. All commercial vehicles are taxed at the lower rate.
I'm going to run this one until it won't run anymore or it falls to bits and if it weren't for the fact that we also have the Denver I would be looking for another. There are lots of them around, especially in the south and quite a few have only ever been used to tow caravans and have low mileage and are in great nick.

I'd love a Fourtrak but there are very few decent ones anywhere near me. Most of them have been used by farmers and have very high mileage (they are also very expensive round here). Alison - I have PM'd you

We had an older 2.5 diesel discovery, and found it struggled on our hilly terrain when pulling a double trailer with two heavy black poinies in it.
At present we have a Range Rover which tows the Ifor Williams 510, with carriage extension, and that has no problem pulling trailer, carriage, and two ponies.
We were fortunate to get the trailer as a friend wanted a quick sale, but Ifor Williams do hold their value, and are snapped up.
Whatever vehicle you get it will probably not do brilliant mpg when towing. We have cut down on our trips out this year, due to excessive fuel bills!!
Personally, I would have another Range Rover (the older ones are not expensive) or a new Discovery.

I have been offered an "R" Reg Landrover Discovery which a "friend of a friend" is doing up. We are going to have a look soon as it "seems" like a good deal and only has a genuine 100k miles on the clock (we've done 75k on our 2005 Altea!). It is a 300 TDI.

300TDI engine should be able to pull well enough, Caroline. We are hoping to change our 4x4 and have looked at a few Disco's. Thing to watch with the older ones is that the lift up back door does seem to be a rust bucket on them. We looked at one Disco, good price, and it was immaculate .....until we went round the back and saw the door!!!

Just spoken to the guy who is repairing the disco. It might be ready in a few weeks or it might be ready next year - he says "he will do it in his own time......." Sigh! I think I might have to look for something else - No one over here has any sense of urgency (even when they are in business).

We have a SWB 2.7 terrano (2001) for towing. We pull an Ifor 505 and it doesnt seem to struggle at all. I use it for work everyday and get about 28mpg out of it - but i do wiz about - if i went slower i would probably get more! And it is due a service! We previously had an L reg SWB Mitsubishi pajero (shogun import) 2.8 Auto - and i have to say - that was a cracking vehicle! Pulled 100% better than the terrano, drove better - even though it was much older with more miles! I simply couldnt afford to upgrade to a newer version and the terrano was the cheaper alternative to do the same job. It was a thirsty blighter though - been Auto didnt help - i dont think it even gave me 20mpg - and that was without the trailer on! My only thought would be the tax issue - anything prior to a Y reg (so 2001) isnt going to be scooped up into Labours wonderful tax hike at the moment - before the increase was put on 'hold' my Terrano was going to be over £400 a year to tax! So - if you are stuck between 2 - take the slightly older one - X or before! God knows what they are going to increase them to in 2011! All the unknowing kills the resale value as well! I am just going to run mine until it dies now!

I'm another fourtrak fan, have had mine 3 years now. I had to have the radiator reconditioned as the fins were nearly all away and it was overheating when towing. Think it would tow a house if you asked it lol

Hi Caroline, My other half does alot of towing with work (diggers and things!) They use izuzus for that which have always been great but heavy on fuel. We have a Mitsubishi L200 double cab 2.5TD as our own vehicle which Brian uses for commuting to work and we use for horsey events. Its Fantastic, it doesnt even know its got the trailer on with two horses in. Tax is £185 a year (roughly) and it does 38mpg without a trailer on. Less obviously with trailer on but not horrendous. Brian said he wouldnt have anything else now and he has driven every 4X4 going! Not great if you want to go off roading but thumbs up from us. As for trailer we prefer the ifor 505 everytime. We did pull one horse with a mondeo estate for years, never any problems, and last time i went to a pleasure ride a lady next to us had a volvo estate pulling 2 horses, she said she had always used it with no problems at all. Good luck x

Well Caroline I tow with a Ssangyong Kyron... I have an Ifor williams 505...mostly with just Connie in but some times with Beaver too with no problem If You can get a second hand vehicle I would think you would be pleased with the performance and towing ability. Looks like you have plenty makes / models to choose from here]

Hi Caroline, I had a Daihatsu for years and towed two horses with an Ifor 505 with no problem at all it also towed my much heavier rice trailer, but I have to say I am sooooo impressed with my defender it has a 2.5 engine turbo diesel and the gear ratio is much lower and its just fab.
