I found a small plait right at the base of one of my mares manes last night. It was very close to her withers and almost under her rug. I could so easily have missed it and only found it cos i was looking for them especially. There have been strangers around locally taking photos or just "talking" to peoples horses and I have also heard that someone have had their tack stolen. I check my horses twice a day and the plait was not there in the morning. Very scary, and I am going to be keeping a much closer eye on things and going at all sorts of times as well. The plaits are used as markers for the theives.

How dreadful!! You must be worried sick. Have you reported it to the police? Please do if you haven't....they might just be able to keep a lookout for you.
I want to ask what area of the country you live in so that anyone living near you can be alert too - but don't want to attract attention of anyone unscrupulous. Oh dear - do what you think best on this one.

I think I read in Horse and Hound that this has been happening all over the country but no actual evidence yet linking the plaiting to actual thefts. No doubt there will be idiots doing this just to scare horse owners. You must be worried sick.

I removed the plait straight away and have moved the horses up to the house but its very worrying. By the way, I obviously dont want to give location details but we are in the East.

I actually found a plait in one of mine too - BUT they CAN plait themselves rubbing on the trees and mutual grooming. I took it out though!! My horses are all near the houses at the moment.

I used to blame people for messing with Prince when we were at livery as I kept finding "plaited" bits in his mane, now we've moved he still gets them so I've realised that it's the wind and rubbing, but it's worth be vigilant as plaits could be a marking the one to take
Pics of any plaits found might help identify wind plaits from deliberate plaits

I suspect there's a big difference between the plaits the ponies sometimes get and one that's been done by a human and carefully tucked into a rug. Fingers crossed these wretches move on without doing any more harm. One other thought, you might want to deface your rugs with large letters and paint. Horrid I know, but I remember the stories of the same type people stealing the rugs in some awful weathers.
