I don't often use the 4X4 bit of my car but have been interested in the tips given in another thread. I thought it might be handy to ask you guys to post your tips in here so they don't get lost!
Cheers!

Don't over-rev or use the brakes too much - let the engine slow the vehicle and let it climb without spinning due to over-revving.
Only use low ratio for serious ice or off-roading. This is a real traction gear and very slow. Forcing it to go faster in low ratio will wreck your engine.
Try to go into 4WD before you need it - otherwise you are starting off at a disadvantage!
Vehicles with optional 4WD (those that you have to select 4WD) shouldn't be driven at over 50 mph while still in 4WD.

yes low ratio is not for everyday use, but if you are faced with a steep/slippy slope (up or down) i feel more comfortable putting it in low box and trundling along very slowly then you don't have to worry about braking as much.
even if you don't have 4WD still try to set off in 2nd gear and get into 3rd as soon as you can (but keep the speed down) and use the gears to slow you down rather than the brakes

Thanks guys! I was fascinated by your description on the other thread of being so excited by driving downhill on ice, with your feet off all the pedals Alison! LOL!

LOL linda, it was when we went for an "off road day" locally, me in daihatsu brother in his landy and friends in their daihatsu. the guide explained to us what to do then took us to a point - at the brink of a steep hill and said "go for it - over the edge!" You are so programmed to brake to slow down/stop you moving forwards it was very hard not to do so!!!!!!!! the first few seconds were heartstopping 'til you realise the engine (in 4LOW) will not go anywhere fast ;D like I said - I lead a very sheltered life.......

I'm towing Floyd this friday so let me get this right.......
I assume I should be in normal driving mode unless I'm... a) off-road or b) driving in extremely wet/icy conditions ? The Frontera didn't seem to have any problems last time but we have to go up the steep hills in 2nd gear quite slowly.
