i've started the seach for my new edition and have seen some absolutely gorgeous ponies. I've decided a gelding would be easier to go with the boys rather than introduce a mare to the mix and have been looking at a selection of 2yr olds. I've narrowed it down to 3 possibles and1 is a lump bigger than the other two so I'm confident he would be big enough to cart me around ((i'm 5ft 6) My one concern is that I have met a little lad who totally won over. He is really lovely although quite a narrow stamp, compared to others I've seen. He's by Samuel Pepys and was wondering if anyone can stop me worrying and tell me he will fill out and be able to carry me I'm convinced he will and know that 2 is an awkward teenage year so was just looking for a bit of reassurance if thats possible. Its been a while since I saw native youngsters, TB's are fine at least if they are taller than you at 2 its ok..at 14.2h in maturity its scary.. I really don't want to rush in without considering what they will be in 2yrs time, I want this one to be a keeper

Don't worry 5ft 6in is nothing for a Dales they have a big barrel so take up the leg, our 14.1hh was ridden by a 6ft man and there were no dangling legs, Dalesponyrider on here is; I'm sure taller than you and her mare is 13.3hh and her gelding is about 14.1hh I think. Yes the two year old will fill out a lot, Dales are a slow maturing breed and are not fully mature until they are about 8, height wise they usually stop about 5 but will continue to get wider Lucydales youngster is by Samuel Pepys here will be some pics here dalesfans.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=story

I have Twywell Rosie Leigh (Tetley) who is a full sister of the pony you are interested in This is her aged 23 months. Not a great photo but you can see she was quite "leggy" then : This is her now, aged 32 months. She hasn't made quite as much height as I thought she would . She's just under 14HH with maybe another inch to come, but she is starting to fill out nicely now and has lovely action. All of Sammy's foals seem to inherit his good temperament (although Tetley has a sharp and cheeky streak too which we love ). Good luck with whichever pony you choose. Helen x

Just a quick reply cos my Internet is playing up.
I've also got a Sammy baby, the gorgeous Mr Jones! I am 5'6" and he's 14 hands at nearly 5 years old.
I can't begin to tell you how much I love this pony. I bred him myself and he is an absolute superstar with the most fantastic sense of humour.
I have just broken him in and he has taken everything, and i mean everything in his stride with no tantrums or tiaras. My friend who is a very experienced horse woman who favours thoroughbreds and warmbloods helped me and has been incredibly impressed by his attitude to work, new challenges, how he looks after me and to life in general. In fact he has made a very good impression for the Dales pony in her eyes.
Everybody who meets him loves him :0)))
I ride out with a 15.1 cob and if I didn't know better I would say he was as big, they do ride big, loads of pony to take your leg up - Ive spent nearly five years fretting that he wasn't going to be big enough LOL. I am so happy to say I was truly wrong.
Oh and just to add I'm no spring chicken and despite his age I have never felt unsafe on my boy.
If you buy this pony I'm sure you won't go far wrong.
Good luck x

Most Dales being native ponies will have big barrels that take up the leg. I have a 14hh gelding who could carry 15st; I've had riders of 5'8" on him who did not look underhorsed. I have another mare who is a tad over 15hh so she is a very substantial weight carrier, and my little youngster Gem is 14hh 1/2 inch, about to be backed but has a girth bigger than my 15.3hh horse! They are strong ponies made for weight carrying . Some Dales mature quickly (a couple of mine did) but some mature slowly. My first two fillies seemed to gain most of their height in their first three years; while my current youngster has taken longer (maybe it's to do with breeding). I wouldn't worry too much about height if you have your heart set on a particular Dales

what an interesting discussion - the one stumbling block I've thought about with considering a Dales next is the height (my Sam is 15.1 and feels about right for me, I'm 5'4). So, very good to read the comments here - and Samuel Peyps does seem to sire some very nice looking babies (def one to remember for the future - would someone be able to tell me where he's based?, did I spot him for sale a while ago or am I imagining that?)

Sammy is with a friend of ours at the moment on loan nr sheffield, not sure what her plans are re breeding but he should be about showing this year and next with her so you should see him about at the breed shows etc i'm sure.
and just to add your average 14/14.2hh dales will take up your leg far better than your average 16hh tb does.

Sam is owned by Aimee Toseland who is based Northants/Notts (depending). Sam has never been for sale and means a lot to Aimee so it is excellent that he has found a fab home for the year. Am soooo pleased Claire has got Sammy to show this season and wish her all the best and losts of success with him, he is a fab pony and they both certainly deserve to do well this season Certainly an exciting combination to look out for!

I've got a 6 year old (how did that happen- 2 minutes ago he was 3 and unbroken!) who's about 14hh. I'm about 5'6 and not a lightweight yet backed and rode him away. He has since been stolen by my sister. I thought he'd be far too small for me but he isn't. Where abouts in N Yorks are you?
