ok so i know close to nothing about showing. was just wondering what products people find best to use on black dales ponies to make the coat shine ect. he has been out twice this year and although he looks good he never seems to shine as well as alot of others in the ring. also i know they are meant to look natural in a native class but does anyone have any tips ect that they use. any help appreciated. thanks beth

I swear by Equine America Magic sheen NOT in the saddle area tho if you do use it lol!! No fancy products for bathing tho either washign up liquid or whatever is the cheapest shampoo on special in the supermarket! Mine do wear full nylon bodysuits after a bath the night before the show and have their tails plaited and in tail bags.

I am not a showing person by nay stretch but we did reasonably well over the years. The one thing you need to do is accept that you will never understand the decisions, that you may be first in a Royal Highland class one day and last at a local agricultural or riding club show the next. From my experience you have to know your judges. One told me I ought to have a white rope halter, another told me they were ugly and I should be using a flat, nylon halter with a chain under the chin. Another told me they should always be in a bridle once they hit two years old. As they mark you down for these things you have to know what equipment is preferred by which judge. Up here be prepared for people to think he's a Highland or a Welsh cob. Put the Dales ribbons in the tail but you might want to avoid red as I used to have huffy people accusing me of bringing a kicker to the class when I used red, white and blue. Practise having them stand up and the individual show at home. Have them so they can quietly run alongside you and take a quiet transition up and down between halt, walk and trot. I also found it helpful to be able to ask them to take a half step backwards or forwards to position the feet when you stand them up for the judge. I al;ways fed a balancer to my youngsters and I've just moved them onto seaweed, both give the coat a really good glow. Sadly you do still seem to need to have them rather overweight to do well at showing. Whenever I've had my Dales fit and at a healthy weight we've always been last or near last with the judge saying they need more condition Are you free on the 9th July? Do you fancy coming down to our in-hand day?

hi heather, the few classes i have done i have always used his bridle for the inhand class as i usually do the ridden as well. i think a balencer would be a good idea too just to make sure he's getting all the essential bits, as to his condition he's got a good covering and is chunky but he's not hugly overweight with wobbly bits and i wouldn't make him like that even if i meant i would get placed higher as i don't agree with it. the show we got 1st was the redwings horse sancuary one and they would not encourage obese horses so i'll have to see if i get any comments about his weight from any others.
unfortunatly i'll be on holiday in dorset on the 9th of july

hi, we've got another show tomorrow and i've just been doing some reasearch on the tail ribbons. i visited a few web sites that all said they are optional but a good idea so the judge knows what breed they are. then the last website i went on said that they are being "gently discouraged" so now i don't know if i should get them or not. any ideas anyone?

Put them in, I think I know which site it was that says that and its wrong to be frank, we always put them in and its part and parcel of the tradition of the Dales pony and we've never been discouraged to use them in 15 plus years of showing Dales now.
Have a good day tomorrow and best of luck!

I buy metre lengths so then when you tie them you have half metre either side of the ribbon, it sounds a lot but looks about right, you can have them much smaller too.
