A bit confused on when to feed as most sites say to use it for 5 days for clear out, but as I want to try it with regard to weight/insulin resistance I am assuming it would be different, any suggestions much appreciated.

EPSM horses can get insulin resistant due to the high levels of oil they have to be fed as they can't use carbs.
On a different level, I took psyllium husk when I was on IV antibiotics for a month - to help keep my bowel moving properly. I certainly didn't have any problems! I took it every day for 2 months, twice a day.

I know some horses in the USA are fed this all the time due to living in the desert and concerns over sand ingestion.
I guess it helps with weight as it moves things along the gut faster and prevents so much nutrition being absorbed by the horse. Anyone know for sure?
Do you have to feed extra vit/min when feeding psyllium?

Heather's right, the horses in Arizona, our western states and California are on it practically nonstop because of the sandy environments. I'll have a look to see if there might be a mineral/vitamin imbalance from it, although initial looks I've never seen a deficiency mentioned with psyllium use. ...edited to say I'm back and I've done several searches and the only thing I could find was that in larger doses, it causes diahhreah in humans. www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=2e87bf28-7b6a-11d5-a192-00b0d0204ae5&gas=psyllium#tabsThat's a link to the product and it looks like 4 oz of the pellet top dressed on their food for 7 days once a month is standard. Frankly if its a year around issue, like them living in a sandy area, I would have them on it non stop. Its a shame the Equus article didn't give the dosages tried in the trial.

What made you get Pagan tested regarding the insulin resistance, was it a weight issue? Yes - she's frighteningly fat on an almost bare paddock, has a hard cresty neck that rivals my stallions, can get quite footy, and has fat pads above her eyes. Diet and exercise seem to have considerably less effect on her compared to my other ponies. Plus she's now 15 which seems to be a common age at which this problem manifests itself. I'm hoping the psyllium may help before she ends up with Cushings.

Have ordered some, can't do any harm! Alfie is just huge on nothing, although he isn't cresty or footy (touch wood) and is bare foot, so who knows?
