Hi all I've got one friend who is giving her Shetty a marmite sandwich a day which seems to work. Also got another who is feeding yeast tablets.... the jury is still out on the yeast tablets as she started them AFTER the itching started, but I'm keen to try Banna on those in the spring. Random extra fact here but the friend who is feeding the yeast tablets is also taking them herself as she had suffered with a very random bout of itchiness...and it's working for her! Banna got very itchy this year so I bought a DeMeulenkamp rug (hmmm check spelling!) They were recommended by my vet, they're a cheaper version of the Boett and it has worked a treat. He had managed to turn around and bite his own tail out.... so both sides were pulled out and he had a stripe down the middle! NOT a good in-hand showing look!!!!!! The rug has stopped all pulling. They're tough too, mutual grooming doesn't tear them. After I ride and then come to put it back on he pushes his head into it as he wants it back on so much, bless him Isn't it wierd how many itchy horses there are out there........ DB x

Well I have the Marmite- -starting in the morning, hope she'll eat it, and have ordered the Avon stuff too so once the rain stops and the mud dries will plaster her in it.
Gonna use the Avon on myself, the midges bite me too on an evening

Fi, at the moment said pony is not getting any bucket feed. I don't like Marmite either but Im sure one of the other greedy burgers (Tinker) will eat it up Can't do any harm.. BUT the good news is that the Avon SSS is working!!!, Have to apply it every other day, but she is not rubbing at all and all her scabby dry skin is coming out! Just have to see if they sell it in 5 Litre tubs...........

hello i am new to this site so hello, we also have a itchy tradditional cob, and we have put him on d-tox by naf and it works, he ran out of his first tub and we did not replace it after about 5 days he started rubbing so went got another tub and few days later stopped again, i think that is vitamine b and d based as well as other bits, he also started to get hot again in his stable when we ran out so it must cool his blood down too.

I hope everyone's horses are coping well this year?! I got my beautiful Poppy in November and we are in the throws of coping with itchy skin. I'm on the hut for the local Avon lady and will be asking the vet to cast an eye over her soon but I feel confident we will get there. We are clinging on to the mane and tail wich grew over winter but it's getting patchier! I have found that NAF D-itch cream works for us if I part her mane and get it right on to her skin and work it in. If I keep her skin moisturised with it, it seems to be really helping and she likes it (now!). We have Global Herbs Scratch Plus which has a really strong smoke smell and she eats it OK now (molassas helps!). Still waiting to see if that will work for her. Now where's that marmite butty...?

I'm now using the Masta bug rugs, they are a much cheaper version of the Boett/DeMeulenkamp/Pagony rugs and they work fantastically well for us. I don't know if Alf actually has sweet itch or is just generally itchy, but keeping him covered in one of these rugs, and just covered in fly spray when he's ridden has made all the difference. He has a full mane and tail and rarely rubs these days; although I do have various potions and lotions from previous attempts to help him, they are now resigned to the bottom of the grooming kit box as I just don't need them now. I can't recommend these rugs highly enough.

Ramdomly adding to an old thread.....
I used to put some stuff called Ridect on Piper about three times a summer and it stopped the itching in it's tracks. It was some kind of cow fly/ bug/ flea repellent and you needed to glove up etc to put on and treat it with respect...... I got it from the vet and it may well have changed brand but it was quite simply a life saver as no other "preparation" worked and I think our one brush with a fly rug resulted in total destruction of the garment......He also never seemed to get badly bitten at all, particulalry in the first few weeks after we put it on.

Please could the contributors to this thread who were trying things report back on how they have worked/progressed?
Many thanks!

I have made my own fly spray... 9 drops of all of these Citronella. Lavender. Oil of cloves. Lemon oil. Mixed with water in an old fly spray bottle, shake well each time to disperse the oils, Scout does and will continue to rub himself, I think it's a habit more than anything else but the fly spray helps keep the bugs at bay AND it's cheaper than anything else x

Add a little white vinegar and its even more effective Valerie. We do something similar using citronella, lavender oil and tea tree oil and some people add cold tea to it as well
