Weather dependant I'm thinking of taking Jet to his 1st show on the 28th, he's woolly and filthy and his mane hasn't grown back yet but as its only low key and indoors I thought it might be a good introduction. Only problem is what should I show him in? Is a white rope halter suitable? (I used to show my welsh youngster in one) Sorry for being a bit naive but as I'd like to takle him to the DPS show next year I'd like to get it right. Thanks

Thanks He's 2, very late tho he's an August foal but is probably 3 times the size he was when I bought him so whilst not expecting a lot it would be nice to get him out and about. I haven't tried him in the halter yet but he's been very obliging with everything else so not anticipating any major issues (famous last words)

Is he a gelding or a colt? Some insist colts are bitted. Mine have inhand bridles and oz also has a halter. Oz looks smarter in a bridle but possibly goes better in a halter. Rory I need the brakes and control of a bit at times!

Thanks for the advice He's a gelding so no problems there, I haven't got an inhand bridle but might take one just in case.. although if it snows i'm staying at home and he can wait til spring fair weather woman that I am now

Is his mane just naturally short or has it been pulled?, if pulled that may go against him at the Breed show

No its just short in places where he'd rubbed it out before I got him unfortunately. he's got a very long forelock tho will that make up for it? ;D

Well Jets 1st public appearance went very well, he behaved impecably even though it was blowing a gale. He was so brave and took everything in his stride more or less, he wasn't too keen on other horses running up behind him but we can work on that. I also discovered he has a massive head as my showing halter I used on my Sec D as a 2yr old was a bit on the small side to say the least , oh well will have to invest in a new one for him. We looked like everyones poor relatives compared to the others but he looked ok for a roughed off hairy pony dragged out of the field mid winter. Amazing what you can do with a plastic curry comb and baby oil! ;D We also met Laura and Anna from the forum with the lovely Harry, was really nice to meet them and put faces to names on here hopefully we can catch up again and I'm going to try to use photobucket to get some pics up All in all a very good day and I'm a very proud mum

oh well done, it's a big thing the first show!! I'm not sure I will be as brave as you, I'm hoping to take Alf in some shows this coming year, but I'm not sure he will behave as well as Jet obviously did, can't wait to see pics of him

More advice please!!! Sorry to be a pain but I've totally got the bug now. I've just got wind there is another show locally on 5th Feb so thinking of making it our 2nd outing, Jet will still be a hairy pony but I suppose technically he'll be 3 now. Should I buy a new white halter or go with a bridle? He is broken to ride and I always thought using a ridden bridle rather than an inhand one was to identify the ridden horses to the judge ( This may be a myth or something I made up myself!!) Also should I experiement with ribbons? If so any particular colours? I've read the previous threads on here and appears red white and blue are for championships so thought I'd avoid those. But wasn't sure if particular studs had set colours that only they use a bit like jockey silks. thanks again peeps, the advice is invaluable

Hey, i would stick with White halter if he is as good as last time. Red White and blue are the traditional dales ribbon colour so most easily recognisable and most used. Some studs use variations etc but I would stick with the traditional ones especially locally in case it confuses the judge etc
