I used to have a really lazy cob who: a) was really hard to get into canter full stop and b) didn't canter on his right lead. My instructor used to put a pole or small slanted jump in a corner and get me to ask for canter just before so he'd reach further with one leg and in theory get the correct lead. Of course being a lazy boy it only worked if he agreed to canter when I asked but the fact that it was a pole made him a bit more forward anyway as he did like to jump! So I'd definitely recommend this method. It worked every time. Failing that, use a schooling whip in the opposite hand to the leg you want him to lead with as well, as well as really exaggerating all your aids! Another tip, do a 10m circle in trot and ask for canter as soon as you go large after the circle. This usually works with me.
