I've been reading up bits on this and some say you need medication & others say it's simply controlled via diet & excersize. After 3yrs being sound my lad last week went "footy", no digital pulses, no heat & no protein lines under the shoes, it was just evident (to me anyway!) he wasn't happy walking so he's been stabled till the farrier could come out. When he did he's 1st reaction was * LAMI * but with no typical signs he wasn't sure and said Doc was obviously borderline. Has anyone on here got experiance with an IR pony Do you have to go thru vets/insurance or IS IT purely basic management I'm totally gutted that he's gone lame, I meticulously weigh tape & with the changes in weather of late I've increased workload; I can only guess that 2 days off because of vacinations pushed he's system over the edge (even though they we're off the grass more those days)

8wks on & i thought I'd update Doc's progress We're now back out in the paddock 10hrs a day in a Greenguard muzzle (tried the Shires webbing initially but he hated it with a passion ) have tried taking the muzzle off but within 1hr he's pulses are raised so he has to stay muzzled all day. He has soaked hay overnight + Simple Systems Timothy Chop & their Cobs. He was 462 on the weigh tape & is now 436 with easily felt ribs but the biggest loss is round he's neck & rump HUGE amounts have gone. He looks pretty good ATM but my biggest concern is that if I UP he's workload which food souce should I up too, more hay, chop, cobs? I'm worried he'll lose MORE weight. Anyone got any ideas

Well done getting Doc's weight down, not an easy task with nour ponies. I find it very interesting what you asy about his pulses going up after just one hour grazing without a muzzle. It just shows how much grass they can pack in in just a short time plus I imagine the sugars are quite high this year with all the rain followed by a bit of sun. I check my lot for pulses daily at the moment. How much work are you giving him? I think perhaps we overestimate how hard we work our ponies - I do anyway. Obviously you don't want him to lose too much more weight but you don't want to feed anything which might trigger a lami episode. It becomes very difficult when they are insulin resistant. I don't know whether it is the same for IR horses but I am feeding Harvey higher oil feeds for energy, ones which are very low in carbohydrates. Sounds like Doc is doing well on Simple Systems so maybe just increase amounts if you are concerned or add some oil or linseed to his normal ration?

Since he's 1st "episode" 3yrs ago I became over sensative to pulses & now check at least twice a day now Sadly he's not road/traffic safe so we only do 45mins schooling every day BUT I do now just about manage to ride upto one of the hay fields "safely" & want to do more of that I've read that Linseed is very good, may just try

I think it's me being Dutch, but I don't have the faintest idea what this topic is about! What's the complete name of the condition(s)? I might be able to figure it out then.
