Was going to breed a foal from Blossom next season, but have now changed my mind after seeing the huge amount of unwanted foals for sale. (non dales, I know, but it made me think twice about adding to the numbers). I found an ad for cob colts going for £100, so went along to have a look. Found a field full of gypsy cob mares, all the foals were colts so they didn't want them! nice foals but being sold as 6 months old and they clearly aren't! I don't reckon they are more than 3 or 4. It was not a case of if not sold they would stay with their mums longer, the owner sends to market or worse apparently. :'(So deposit put down on one! He'll be weaned off in a couple of weeks and then delivered. I am wondering what to feed him as I wish to give him as best a start as I can, poor baby! As he would normally still be getting milk, is there any suitable sort of milk powder he could have? Just wish I could home more of them but not possible

ah that is a lovely thing of you to do for your new boy.
You can buy milk pellets (aka foal creep pellets) but I suspect he will just need good grass and access to water to start wtih as he won't be used to any hard feed. His mum will have taught him to graze so thats a good starting point and if you've something to put him with that will teach him to eat hard food you can put him on something like Baileys stud balancer (perfectly ok for little ones, our orphan has been on it for ages) and hay.

...and don't forget to worm him after he's settled in for a few days. Coming from a home like that, I doubt he, or his dam, will have had any worming treatment whatsoever Looking forward to pics. He's one of the lucky ones

These people have the guts to call themselves breeders. They clearly do NOT have the animals best interest in mind. I think it's wonderful of you that you are saving one. Can't save em all, sadly.
I wish you lots of luck with raising your newborn son :-D

Kept thinking of the poor little boy all on his own in a strange place... can't be done.... Going back tonight to leave deposit on another. ;D I can rear them on over the winter and hopefully find a suitable home for one of them in the spring when gelded. I think it will be a lot easier with the 2, as they can graze together too and I won't have to worry about them getting bullied by the others. Wish I could just open a horse charity!

hats off to you for rescuing these boys in preference to breeding from your girl. Perhaps not the issue with Dales ponies, but there is so much indiscriminate breeding it's so terribly sad.
