Crying my eyeballs out right now

Yesterday Cassey's best friend/husband/bodyguard Igor was sadly struck by severe colic. His rider called me to ask if it was ok to put Cassey in the stable with him overnight so he wouldn't be alone. When I went there in the middle of the night he seemed fairly ok. I could see he was in pain, but he was not rolling or lying down. He had some wind, and I expected he would poo before morning.
This morning I got a call from the yard manager that it had gotten worse and he could not be rescued. The vet had already arrived. I went there right away, Igor was lying down in the riding pen, Cassey was there also. He lay very still and all tensed up. The sedation relaxed him a bit, and when they gave him the shot he let out a big sigh and was gone within half a minute.

He was only 22 years old and as healthy and happy as can be.

So sad, he and Cassey were so very close, always together. He was a true Gentle Giant and will always have a special place in my heart.

Thank you, my friend. Thank you for taking care of Cassey so well, my sweet big Igor.

Call it divine intervention or whatever: the memory card of my phone seemed to be broken, I lost all my photo's and video's of my children, horses, and most important at this moment: Igor!

This evening suddenly it's all back. Quickly uploaded all to my laptop, and I found 2 lovely vids of Cassey and Igor together.

that is terribly sad, but lovely that Cassey was able to help in in his last hours. Losing her friend will be awful for her, but she will grieve better for having been with him and understanding his need to go.

This was summer 2011 when Cassey got injured severely on her already bad leg.
The funny thing is: At first we put Cassey on a paddock by herself. Igor's owner and I decided we'd put Igor there if he wanted to. They were only parted by the electric fence, so I thought Igor would be ok. Well, not really. He went under the fence with that huge body of his to be with his girl, and we found them side by side like nothing had happened.

Bilbo lost his best pal to Laminitis very quickly a few weeks ago and I am now wondering whether to get a 2nd horse so he is never alone again.

I'd def get a buddy if he's all alone. I'm a firm believer that horses shouldn't be alone. Luckily Cassey's small herd immediately came to her after Igor was put down, just to stand by her. They could all see the riding pen from the paddock, so they got a good look at what happened.

She looks ok now, she's eating well and the herd is calm. I'm glad her leg is ok too.

oh poor Igor, he looked like such a sweetheart. Glad to hear Cassey is doing OK, it will have helped them both that they were together at the end.
