This might seem a silly question but why do we feed chaff? If our ponies are fed ad lib hay do they need chaff mixed in with their balancer?

They have to chew more so it slows down their eating and helps to prevent choke

I don't think they do need chaff. I think people use it just to make it seem more like a big feed but if the ponies are getting a full, pelleted balancer and ad lib hay, then no need other than to fill the food merchants pockets.

I'd always feed a chaff. The more fibre the better really. Keeps them chewing and therefore increases levels of saliva which balances out stomache acids; preventing ulcers. Like Zelda's said also stops them choking, especially if you're feeding small pelleted feeds.

I always feed chaff and would never feed balancer or other pellets without using chaff or sugarbeet to slow down the rate of eating and provide more bulk. I always damp my feeds down too.

Lady gets v low calorie chaff to keep her occupied while Harley eats; Harley gets chaff to bulk out his feed and carry the oil. Monty got chaff because he liked it and would eat it!
