Over the last few years, I've tried a couple of types of boot grips on my wellies when the weather has been snowy or icy. I'm really impressed with what a difference they make, although I still take care.
The ones I've used are:
Yaktrax Pro: www.yaktrax.co.uk/
These are the first ones I used. I liked the pro version because the velcro strap going over the boot really helps keep it in position and stops the grips pinging off. The only downside I found with yaktrax was that the little metal coils that wrap around the rubber strands seem to work their way off gradually, and then they get caught up in things like haynets on the ground etc. But on the whole I really like the yaktrak pro. Oh, the other thing they aren't good on is tiled floors, so I just had to be careful if I went into a shop that had a shiney tiled floor as I'd have absolutely no grip on there...... but really I used the grips for yard work more than anything else.
The ones I've switched to now are nIcetrekkers diamond grip: www.icegripper.co.uk/store/chain-traction/icetrekkers-diamond-grip
They are more expensive than the yaktrax but seem a lot more durable. They have no metal coils to come off and get caught in things, and I just get the impression they are altogether more substantial and better suited to heavy duty use. They really power over icy surfaces - you can feel the spiky bits digging into the ice and giving good traction. Only downside I've come across so far is that the spiky bits probably would dig into softer surfaces like soft foam carpets etc....... but then I only use them on the yard, so that's not a problem.
What are other people's experiences of ice grips? Are there any others you'd recommend?
