I thought grey would be A as are roans? They are both accepted colours I believe. I have a book with a pic of "Grey Bobbie" who was a champion stallion (1966-1989) so think that would have to be an A wouldn't it?
Just spotted Teasdale Comet too-he was also grey

As with all the colours it comes down to the white markings - many greys are born black and so it is easy to see any white markings which cause them to be a Section pony. As they grow older they grey out and the white markings are then less obvious. Most grey lines go back to Grey Bobbie - and Teasdale Comet. Roans with high white would also be B's. All lines have the gene for extra white markings so they can crop up in any line.

This is probably a silly question - how about greys? Are they As or Bs? Harley is a B because he has too much white on his hind leg, and is also over-height at 15.1hh. Conformation-wise he has a super front end, but is close behind, which to me is more of a fault than the amount of white, as Penny said further up in the posts. Dales should be close behind Jane, they were bred as small draft horses for farmwork among other things and would be no good for ploughing etc if they were wide because they would undo everything they had just ploughed

Yes, I guess you are right - but there's close and close - and he's really close, brushes badly.
Good thought though - I like the vision of them unploughing the furrows!!!!
I wondered if the greys was to do with the colour when they are born. all very interesting!

Please could you explain the term "high white" with reference to roan. I am imagining it has something to do with the amount of white in the mix? Thanks

Sorry if I confused you. 'High white' is just the amount of white markings on the back legs, if it's above the fetlocks. The breed standard on markings states - 'A white star and /or snip on the head. White fetlocks to the hind legs only. Mismarked ponies will be down-graded to the grading-up register.'

Can you imagine the difficulty I have in explaining the white markings system to my vet in FRENCH Luckily so far, all of our foals have had black legs and just small stars at mid or upper eye level, so not too complicated. I fully expect Inca to have a foal with a white hind this year (she has one herself) so it would be very useful for me if the DPS do have a line-drawing that clearly shows the acceptable cut-off point on the fetlock. Does anyone know if such a thing exists?

Don't know about that Helen but I have it in a Dales Despatch that it can be white to the top of the fetlock joint if that helps.

Thank you. Its fascinating-I'm currently working my way through my "Dales Pony" book with a pedigree in hand looking at the pics and seeing who is related to Digger! Well it's only part of the pedigree as I have just picked certain strains and followed them back to the 1600's. I couldn't manage the whole thing or I would be buried under a mountain of paper!! Lol

How much face white in markings are ok in Section A? I just saw a photo of a lovely mare who I would have said was a Section B but she was registered as an A. What defines a star? Or eye level? No worries there as she has a thrilled new owner, is an old line and will have gorgeous foals but curious. Thoughts?

To me that is ok for a Sec A, I would say eye level is not below the bottom of the eye shape only my opinions thos
