If the vets can't get to the bottom of it (and sometimes lameness can be very tricky to resolve), you could still try chiropractors and physios. I've been able to spot lameness sources after the vets weren't able to for owners. I hope they can find it for you and Alick, though. Lameness is awful

So sorry to hear about Alick. I'm afraid I don't have any helpful suggestions, but I hope you find a good way forward.

Hi, sorry to hear about your pony, how old is he? I had to semi- retire my Fell 2 years ago due to ringbone in both front legs, he started with special shoes and bute but kept having to increase bute to keep him comfortable. He is now on white willow bark which contains salacilic acid (like asprin) and this keeps him comfortable enough for some light hacking when the ground is soft and no long term side effects like bute. my vet was very supportive of trying it and has been so pleased with the results that he now has several clients horses on it with good effect. You can get it from Thunderbrooke Equestrian and is much cheaper than bute too. Hope he continues to improve

Alick was doing really well but now he really lame on right hind leg think hes done his other stifle in now!!!! he had some equisage on monday teatime to loosen and helps his muscle/joints and he did really well rode him and seemed ok after, put out in field and come to get him tuesday looked stiff walking up field but thought i rode him yesterday, then went to walk him on after a brush and he was hopping lame could hardly walk on leg, eventually he loosened up, vet came up again! and thinks he has slipped, fallen, or just had a mad session in field!!! and set his leg of, hes better today but still not right on it, so looks like hes gonig to have to go back up for xrays ect.... its looking more like he will be retired horse than working now!!!

Sorry to hear about Alick's persistent lameness. The latest episode sounds very similar to what I'm going through with Robin. He's been diagnosed with bone spavin (after x-rays) and had the joint injected 2 weeks ago. He first presented hopping lame in March and the vet thought it could be a problem in the sacral area. A day later I noticed a lump on the coronet band and the vet thought it was a cold abscess and gave me some bute for him. He seemed ok to ride out during April but then in May he started refusing to walk down hills and to trot, especially on the roads. Vet out again and this time he did a flexion test which showed classic signs of spavin. I'm really hoping Robin comes sound and am trying the white willow as suggested by dalesnfellfan . . . thanks for the suggestion, what a great website that is! Hope Alick is feeling more comfortable soon

Hi I don't have much to offer but sympathy - there is nothing worse than the not knowing! I hope you can make him comfortable. I wish I had known about this forum when I had my boy, everyone is so supportive. x
