I know it is traditional to use red, white and blue, but can you use any colour ribbons in tails?

I've seen several different colour combinations used but as I'm not a showing person I can't say what is correct.

I was hoping others would come and post as I know you can indeed use other colours. (editing because it's early morning and that didn't post the way I wanted it to read I'm glad Pam's posted to tell you already!) I think it was HeatherA who used pastel colours for her ponies when she was showing. I loved seeing the pale colours used for the tail

Pretty sure any colour is fine. Saying that I do tend to stick to red, white and blue although Pait has different this year

Thats great Thanks. Thinking of tying (no pun intended) in the colour of the ribbons to match the check in my jacket and tie.

I used different colours to be slightly different to the norm and the colours seemd to go well with my pony

I used different colours as people assumed my horses kicked and/or were stallions when I used red, white and blue and used to have a go at me about it. I moved to maroon and green for a while then to green and blue, never made any difference to our placings but they looked nice. I think ribbons matching your jacket would be lovely.

I went through a phase of brown with a burbery check, I also did a short red and blue with a long thin white third ribbon, whatever you want really.

This is our new look. Need to trim the ribbons a bit shorter I think

Sorry for the newbie question but what are the ribbons for? I was always told that only horses who were kickers (red ribbon), green/novice (green ribbon) or stallions (yellow ribbon) wore ribbons in the tail with the exception of heavy horses. Is it a breed thing?

Yes, it's a traditional breed thing.
