Interestingly my equine physio said she thinks that horses with strong soles and hooves are in pain when they are shod? Something about the pressure and power needed to drive a nail home? I know my farrier is in pain when he has done Lad (our first summer shod due to splints I suspect he got from Pasture Play) as he holds for only so long and then snatches his great hoof away!--very unlike his behavior re trimming. He very enthusiastically recommends pulling the shoes mid-November.

That's interesting and makes sense as it must require an awful lot of strength to nail through a good hard hoof that has been barefoot for some years. Harvey has been shoeless for many years now and when the farriers do pre-competition checks at the vetting stage at Endurance comps they always comment on how exceptionally hard Harvey's hoofs are and how they can't imagine him ever needing shoes or boots.

It's been 5months now since having our shoes off, yesterday was another trim day where the "wild hoof" man gave us 10/10 for management/progression. The sides to our frogs in the front feet are now quite deep which he said is a GOOD sign meaning the pedal bone is raising. We also have NO signs of thrush in any hoof! Our hinds have almost a new hoof now, just slight cosmetic flaring. I'm so pleased and as long as we can get thru the spring without any tying up/lami episodes, dare I say I'm looking forward to 2014

That's excellent news, well done for persevering (especially in the face of criticism from others at your yard) Hope it all goes well for you in 2014
