Thanks Maggie, I remember being amazed at the different food, customs and way of life in the north east when I went to live there as a 20 year old new bride to my first husband who was a Geordie, some I liked and some I didn't.
We lived first in Newcastle and I had to learn a whole new vocabulary just to understand my work mates, then had 6 months in the lakes near Keswick (wonderful) before moving to county Durham where we spent 5 years before moving back down south.
I remember in those days on a Friday and Saturday night couples didn't go out together in Newcastle, the men and women went out clubbing/ drinking separately and later when we lived in a village near Durham couples went to the pub together but the men all ended up in the bar and the women in the lounge/snug, in some pubs women weren't allowed in the bar, I found that very strange, in fact I found the North East very chauvinistic in those days, I'm sure it's different now.
The first real row we had was because when having a discussion before a general election and I said I thought I might vote Liberal Rob told me in no uncertain terms that I was his wife so I had to vote for who he he told me to, I thought he was joking, but no he was deadly serious, I think that was the first nail in the coffin.
I also remember the first time we went to a 'pie and pea' night at the village social club, I was expecting steak & kidney pie and garden peas and was horrified to have a bowl containing a hot pork pie swimming in very liquid mushy peas put in front of me.
Once I got used to it I really enjoyed my 7 years up there, especially the friendliness and kindness of the local people, and I didn't want to come back down south but we had to go where my husbands job took us.
