Just to brighten up our short days why don't we start thinking about Spring. Does anyone have any foals due in 2014?

Our 2013 foals Destiny and Defender only left us last week so I was missing them and hadn't really thought about next year's foals. However, I moved my herd to a new paddock yesterday, and suddenly noticed just how much the pregnant girls are now showing - they are definitely slower and got left behind in the stampede to new grass We have 5 foals due in 2014 : Gem (Manorian Moonstone), Tetley (Twywell Rosie Leigh) and Becky (Packsfield Ella Beck) are all in-foal to our bay roan stallion Coverdales Carnival King. Inca (Wolsey Quebec) is in-foal to our black stallion Wilf (Thornville Pride) ..and our new Fell mare Greenholme Spice is hopefully in-foal to a black Fell stallion Grahamsley Crackerjack. It's going to be a busy season for us. We're also excited to see Concoret Louise's foal - a French Dales mare that came to Wilf for covering. Her owner Bruno has become a very good friend, so we have everything crossed for a happy outcome for him

We are weaning the last two 2013 foals tomorrow and also starting to think about lambing so foaling is very much the back of our minds!
We have a handful due, I am particularly excited to see Nipna Invictus's first foals onto Nipna Clematis and Nipna ballotta nigra. Victor is Wolsey Xabis first colt so I hope the cross works back onto Lowhouses black magic mares.

Wow, 5 foalies for the Kingmaker Stud! Last two years you had 3, right?
I just love Tetley, she's so cute.

Wow, 5 foalies for the Kingmaker Stud! Last two years you had 3, right? Yes - Destiny, Dakota and Defender in 2013. Calissi, Ciena and Comet in 2012. Four the year before We have staggered the covering dates this year in an attempt to have them foal in pairs. Well that's the plan. You can guarantee the girls won't stick to their due dates Good luck to everyone expecting foals. Exciting but risky and stressful times xxx

I already feel like making up names for all your new babies, don't you? :-)

I already feel like making up names for all your new babies, don't you? :-) We tend to have some ideas in advance because our name choices are heavily regulated by the French National Stud - they have to start with the letter "E" in 2014 and have a maximum of 8 letters, and the name has to be registered very quickly - within 15 days of the birth, but we always wait until the foals are born so we get a feel for their character. Often things happen during their birth or first few days of life which influence our choices. For example, Finn born in 2010 needed an "A" name and would probably have been called Apollo, but he stood up immediately after he was born and went on a mini adventure round his stable, so he became Kingmaker Adventurer instead Feel free to think up "E" names for us if you want. Martin and I are not superstitious so we don't personally perceive it as bad luck, although I respect the fact that other breeders may do so. We have about 20 possibilities so far. I wonder if you'll duplicate any of them? As usual, some of Martin's ideas are slightly obscure!!!

Yes, I remember the 8-letter rule. Doesn't make it any easier...
My friend just gave birth to a little girl called Emily. That's a nice name. But I wonder if it's too human-ish for a horse?
Atm I can't really come up with any... but will keep on brainstorming!

I didn't realise it was supposed to be bad luck to have someone name your foals? I've heard of it being bad luck to change a horses name (and I superstitiously wouldn't). Have been amusing myself at quiet times at work by thinking of names, so here's a few I thought of: Ephebe, Evelyn, Estella, Elsie (was my grandmother's name), Esme, Ella, Elfie, Emerald for girlies and Ensign, Ebony, Emblem, Erik, Emperor (tho a bit too regal) for boys. Any matches??!

I didn't realise it was supposed to be bad luck to have someone name your foals? ... I think it's more the thought of choosing a name before the foal is born which some people may be cautious about xx ETA - no matches, lol.
