Axiom 1800 denier turn-out rug

My new pony Jac arrived with a full clip (just legs and head left on) so I bought 2 brand new turn-out rugs for him off ebay; a Weatherbeeta Original 1200 denier medium weight, with detachable neck in a very fetching shade of chill-red and chocolate :

and an Axiom 1800 denier Balistic medium weight combo in purple and navy. It normally retails at £69 on ebay but the seller frequently lists a selection of rugs which you can bid on. I got a steal at just £29!!!!!!!

The Weatherbeeta is great - you'd expect it to be with a £90 price tag - but I am most impressed with the Axiom. It is lovely and deep, nice and wide across the chest, the tail flap is ample and there are generous shoulder gussets which don't inhibit Jac's speed trots and mad mustang moments in the paddock. He is also a very energetic roller and the Axiom rug hasn't slipped once. We've had non-stop rain for almost a week and he's stayed totally dry and toasty warm underneath. The rug also has reflective strips so I can find him easily in the dark. He's out with other horses, four of whom are delinquent youngsters, and so far, there isn't a mark on the super tough 1800 denier fabric.

This is Jac modelling the Axiom. You can see that it's a bit too big for him. He takes a 5'9" in the Weatherbeeta so I ordered the same size Axiom, but I would easily have got away with a 5'6" as the Axiom sizing is so generous. I shall definitely be on the look-out for another. I don't think there's many places where you can get an 1800 denier breathable turn-out at such a bargain price

I would agree with all you said about Axiom rugs. I bought one without the neck cover last year for Jaycee and I have found it really good, no complaints at all. By the way Helen, how do you find Weatherbeeta come up on sizing, are they a bit on the small side?

I think the 5'9" Weatherbeeta is on the small size compared to the Axiom, but I suspect that it's the Axiom that is generous, and the Weatherbeeta is probably truest to it's described size, if that makes sense?

I'm really chuffed with both rugs, although I don't personally like the Velcro straps on the underside of the neck cover of the Weatherbeeta, mainly because my gloves stick to the Velcro when I'm doing it up
The Axiom has buckle straps on the neck cover which I prefer.

The chilli red and chocolate colour of the Weatherbeeta gets my friends' and neighbours' votes in the style department, but I just don't think it's worth the extra expense. Jac is doing his best to turn his entire new wardrobe clay-coloured anyway

I find the Weatherbeetas come true to size although I prefer the Landa Freestyle to the Original as they have shaped inserts around the shoulders which I find fit native shoulders better and never get any rubbing on the shoulders, price wise they are expensive but Equestrian Clearance usually have some good deals especially on last years colours, I got 2 a couple of years ago half price for £42 pounds each

Yes the axiom does look a bit deeper than the weatherbeeta but I love the colour of the latter. Jac looks lovely, have I missed something on here, is Jac a new riding pony for you?

Yes, he's one of our homebred foals that we sold as a yearling to a new home in County Durham. He's now 5 and I've just bought him back to be my main ridden pony. I still ride his mum but she keeps having time off on maternity leave. With Jac being a gelding, he won't ever have that excuse
He's settled straight back in and is great fun.
