We had to take Emerald and Silver down to the vet this morning as when I was grooming her I noticed what I thought was a scrape just below her hind fetlock on the outside and Amy said Silver had got a similar lesion on his inside fore leg, on closer inspection we discovered they both had mud fever, Em in both hind legs and a small amount in front and Silver in both front legs. It wasn't too bad but they both had some small areas that were raw and bleeding and Em had also been very itchy and rubbing her neck and mane and tail so I wondered if she had got mites and thought a trip to the vet may be the best option now rather than treating it at home.
The vet confirmed it was mud fever and had starting to get infected so gave us some antibiotic and steroid cream and told us to wash with hibisrub remove scabs, dry and put cream on. She suggested that we clip their feathers off to make treatment easier. Em doesn't do clippers so I thought it would be interesting, but she let me clip the worst bits off before she'd had enough and I took the rest off with scissors so its not very pretty but it does allow me to treat it properly, I'll try and tidy her legs up a bit over the next few days with the clippers if she'll let me.
She also gave them both an injection for mites so hopefully that will stop her itching.
We were intending to do a couple of M&M classes at our local riding club show in May, I don't suppose it will go down too well having clipped legs but I will probably take her anyway for the experience.
I feel really guilty for not spotting it sooner, but its not easy to see under all that feather, I will be more vigilant in future though.
