I had a saddle made for Pip a few years ago and it's been wonderful (never slipped once) but it's very heavy. My back is now quite sore and I'm struggling to lift it easily so I was hoping to find a lighter alternative.
I wondered if anyone had an recommendations for lighter weight saddles? I don't mind synthetic as long as it's a good fit and I can't afford to spend a fortune. I've had a Wintec before but the Gullets don't seem to be a good fit on Pip. He's not flat backed and the tree in his leather saddle has a definite curve to it.
If necessary I'll get a saddle fitter out and see what's the best option.

I've borrowed a Thorowgood synthetic saddle for Spud and it's much lighter than his leather one, I can lift it onto his back myself even with the broken shoulder, it's a good fit on him with the wide gullet in, doesn't slip or move and it's very comfortable and feels secure to ride in. Spud is a very chunky Fell. I've ridden in a wintec and I much prefer this thorowgood.

When I backed Wurzel we had a synthetic Thorowgood. They are nice saddles.
The monoflap leather saddles are much lighter these days but I suspect are only made in leather. Maybe look for a second hand one?

I am very fond of my Ideal GP--had it made to Lad with hoop tree and it fits both of us very nicely and is lovely and light.

I sympathise with you, Caroline. I now have a lightweight monoflap and it is soooo much easier for me to deal with. I've had it a few years now and it suits me and Harvey perfectly although I don't think many Dales people ride in event saddles! Got it second hand as new is expensive.
Harvey also has more of a curve than most Dales Ponies and I found the saddles most people use for their Natives no good for him. I always thought Thorowgoods used a flatter tree than Wintecs but I guess there are different trees for different styles. I think your best bet is to get a saddler out.

Thanks for the replies.
I love Pips made-to-measure saddle and it's very comfortable to ride in but I can barely lift it any more. I think I will have to save up a little more and get a good saddle fitter out. If anyone has any recommendations for anyone who sells 2nd hand saddles and is a good saddle fitter who will come to Leeds then please let me know. xx

The Saddle Company saddles are lightweight with serge panels. Jay has one of their special edition ones - the Heather Moffat easisit dressage and its incredibly light.
