She's doing really well thanks Zelda, we're 2 1/2 weeks in and so far she hasn't shown any bad effects from the detox/dying bacteria (hope that doesn't mean that nothing's happening), I think it's doing something as she is much happier, much less stroppy and bargy and now can tolerate rain on her again.
At the moment she is more like the old polite Emerald, she still has her moments but generally she's more relaxed, she's no longer knocking me over and now stops before she gets to me and approaches nicely when she comes for scratches when I'm poo picking. Until last week she didn't care if she ran over the top of me, which just was not like her at all, I am starting to think it may not be out of the question that I'll ride her again at some point.
She sees Donna again next Thursday so we'll see how she thinks she's doing then.

That all sounds really positive, fingers crossed she continues to improve and you can get back on board

Took Em to Donna today for her check up and she's doing really well, she is showing signs of detox in her coat and her hoofs (big bruises) and she is quite shut down and very cuddly at the moment. Donna said she is very toxic and she did some work to release the toxins from her liver and colon and kidneys, she let out a huge groan when Donna released the liver, then went to sleep for the rest of the treatment.
She has altered the protocol of treatment slightly and she sees her again in 6 weeks.
I found out that the main bacteria she has an overgrowth of is Psuedomonas which I know is an absolute b****r to get rid of, and also Candida, but Donna's experience is that both react pretty well to the Arch Angelica she is having. She is really pleased with her progress so fingers crossed she continues to do well.

That's interesting. Good to hear Em is progressing as hoped.

Em's now completed the first 6 weeks of her treatment and is doing well. When she saw Donna she was releasing a lot of toxins from the dead bacteria into her body and this has shown in her coat and hoofs rather than in bad behaviour, she is still firmly holding onto a very thick winter coat which has gone very dull and staring.
She starts the second phase of the treatment tomorrow which is to stabilise the gut and create the right environment to reintroduce the good bacteria back into the gut, she has been having one lot of bacteria from the start but after another 6 weeks she will then have another 2 lots of different bacteria and Donna thinks she will give her a third new lot she is currently trialing.
I'm starting to get optimistic for the future now.

Poor little Em. She was obviously in a very bad state, but all praise for you for sticking with it and taking the time to dose her up with such a variety of natural stuff. Glad she has responded well and I'm keeping my fingers crossed she will make a full recovery and be back to the sweet pony I met last year. Does Donna have any ideas on how she got so many bacteria and rubbish in her system?

hang in there. You're doing so great at ensuring she's getting the treatments she needs. Em really is lucky to have you for her owner. I'll continue to keep everything crossed for her. Thanks for continuing to update this, it's been interesting for me to follow

Glad she has responded well and I'm keeping my fingers crossed she will make a full recovery and be back to the sweet pony I met last year. Does Donna have any ideas on how she got so many bacteria and rubbish in her system? Kate, I suspect that Em's gut was in a very poor state when she came to me, she was very thin and when she had her first treatment with Donna, about 6 weeks later, she had inflamed gut, liver and kidneys which she treated with detox and bodywork, we always knew she had not fully recovered and the way she reacts to chemicals is all part of it. What we don't know is whether there is any permanent damage as we don't know what caused it in the first place, it could be some sort of plant poisoning, I'm sure there are many horses that were as thin or thinner than Em that don't have the long term issues she has.
We were just managing it, but I think the general anaesthetic and the antibiotics and meds plus the stress when she had her op just pushed her over the edge.
Yes she really is a sweet pony, I'm hoping for a full recovery as well, when she's been well she has tried her best for me and given me so much pleasure and that's with her not ever having been 100%, so I think she will be a very special little girl if she can totally recover.
In a way I'm glad it came to head as it will be so much better if we can get it properly sorted now rather than it rumbling on and just managing it for the rest of her life, she is only 8.
