Went to get him in and found him holding up his front leg - major panic, he was very sore walking and really not himself, so called vet out but the oncall vet wasn't a largeanimal vet and seemed a bit out of her depth - couldn't really pinpoint what the trouble is:(. we put him in a wee section with Ben so he can still move but not too much, he does seem a bit better/brighter now so will get Ben the equine vet out tomorrow. We think the knee on that side is a bit puffy so maybe he's been kicked, Gem is in season and a bit handy with her legs when she is - Feeling quite worried about him

Oh gosh what a worry for you. Hope it's nothing too serious and he is back to normal soon.

Oh dear, they do make us worry. Fingers crossed you are right and it's just a minor kick which sounds the most likely.

Oh no! I hope your regular vet can sort it pronto for you and Trev. It's such a worry when you don't know what's wrong, but they clearly hurt

Vet thinks it's an abscess has dug about(i'm not keen on that) and said to poultice it but Trev is a complete won't let me put the poultice on doesn't like either the heat or the vet wrap was trying to go up so he's back out in the field til Sara get home then there will be three of us

Ooooh I'm so glad you waited for reinforcements, Zelda no sense in you getting harmed! I wondered if it would be an absess. One of my girls has one on her front foot too. I think it's because we had such a wet Spring and just now the ground's gone hard. There are times she really potters about. I don't like it when they dig about in the foot like that either but really, they do need to get all the pus out and let it drain. I'm sure Trev will get to feeling better soon. Do you have to leave the poltice on him, or is it a bucket soak type poltice? Food buckets and treats will make all the difference to a Dales pony

Glad you got the poultice on safely. Is it still on this morning? When Frankie had one I did a thin poultice and put a hoof boot over. It kept coming back and in the end I just put honey on the abscess area and then a boot. Honey worked better than anything!

It's a leave on one Debbie, and the boot still on this morning. He did have a very small crack in the hoof where the vet has dug out, so fingers crossed that is the root of the problem

No obvious yuk on the poultice did it for three days, have put them all together again he seems almost completely sound now his knee is still a bit puffier than the other but maybe it always is - I really should know where he has one knee bigger than the other bad mummy
