About all this weather is fit for - reading books on training horses.
Which books would you recommend?
Top of my list is:
Dressage For The 21st Century by Paul Belasik. Suberb. If you only ever buy 1 book about dressage training make it this one.
Dressage For The New Age by Dominique Barbier.
Perfect Manners and Perfect Partners by Kelly Marks.
All of Mark Rashid's books.
An eclectic mix I know but I like to leave no stone unturned!

I have a large bookcase in my bedroom full of horsey books of all sorts - most of which I've not read cover to cover (I always fall asleep!).
I have a vast assortment of all kinds of dressage books, some by classically orientated authors such as Sylvia Loch and Heather Moffett, and others by authors such as Jenny Loriston Clark and Carl Hester. I've got two books about Francois Baucher and Alexis Francois L'Hotte, which are supposed to be very good but are very heavy going!
I'm always being recommended other books to buy (the Paul Belasik is one) but I'd never get round to reading them lol!
I've got a myriad of training books from all camps - Parelli, Tom Dorrance, John Lyons, Clinton Anderson etc - not that I follow any particular one but each has bits which are interesting.
If there is one book which I love looking at if only for the pictures, it's In Deference by Anja Beran - this woman has the most beautiful (and sickening) classical position, and her horses always look wonderful on a light rein. Sigh!

I go along with all Gill has said except I haven't come across Anja Beran - will make a point of looking her up.
I can't think of any additional books that have truely inspired me but I ahve been to many dressage clinics and been fortunate to have had lessons from a few top trainers but the one that made the greatest impression on me was Rheine Klimke. I can't speak too highly of him.

Wow did you have a lesson with Reiner Klimke Pam - lucky you! I have his book on training young horses - I find it interesting that he recommends they are started in a drop noseband to avoid the habit of opening the mouth.
Like you I've had a few inspiring lessons, one with Heather Moffet, trouble is they spoil you as it's hard to find local trainers who are up to their standard!

I was thinking of buying the Anja Beran dvd, I love the way she rides. Have heard that it is inspirational rather than educational tho.
Reiner Klimke was always my hero, with Ahlerich. Please tell us more......
Dressage For The 21st Century is very easy reading - not at all heavy going.
Have you seen the Mark Rashid dvd's? I've only got 'Understanding Footfall' but the man's a genius. Everything he says I think, yes, that's so obvious, so how come it never occured to me before? He did some clinics near us before I had really come across him. I wish that I'd gone now.
I also admire Richard Maxwell with his quiet, affectionate and humerous approach to horses. I worked through all the Parelli stuff, and enjoyed it, but I find them a bit too loud and showy for me

No I didn't have lessons with Klimke! It was a 3 day ABRS run Clinic at Towerlands. At the time Irene was running a riding school so we went together. I've been to watch loads of clinics over the years given by top names in the dressage and NH world, but this one surpassed them all. He started with GENUINE novice horses, then more experienced ones right up to Grand Prix - he had some average, unknown riders like you and me plus some well known names like Jane Bartle Wilson. It was VERY interesting. The way he taught was inspirational.
Then, on one of the evenings, he was giving a small get together/discussion evening with slides etc for just a few people he knew and somehow, me and Irene got the wrong end of the stick and managed to get ourselves invited! It was brilliant!
I know what you mean about the great trainers - once you've expereinced lessons with them it is impossible to find any one locally to live up to that!

Sounds fantastic Pam!
I am not sure if In Deference is generally available, I got mine from Heather - she has to import them. The DVD is supposed to be good, I've seen snippets of it and Anja Beran is definitely inspiring to watch (but does leave you with a feeling of inadequacy LOL!).
I have only heard good things about Mark Rashid, he's one person I keep meaning to get books by and haven't got round to it.
I think you learn something from all of these people.

'Living And Working With The Horse Of Spain' by Peter Maddison-Greenwell is fab. Ok there is a lot about the history of Spanish horses that will not apeal to us Native people but there is fab info on training the horses. I would highly recommend it.
I also like the Pippa Funnell 'Training the Young Horse'
