I once rode in a synthetic western saddle, not sure if it was a wintec or not (don't think so) but I was crippled for weeks after. The seat seemed to have a ridge right in the wrong place! See if you can test drive one first.

Mine is a fibreglass tree but the rest is leather and suede - the fibreglass tree makes the saddle quite light.
Mike won't ride in anything else, and I quite like it as well, very comfy and it really seems to free up Apollo's shoulders.

If you can get someway to trial different saddles before buying, so much the better, even with the western saddles. Everyone assumes they're comfy, but I've sat on some truly truly awful western saddles in my day. Some were rough on me, some rough on the horse, and some were just plain awful for both of us.

Western saddle can feel comfortable sitting on it for a minute. But, a long trail later and your bumm is screaming for help and the pony ain't too happy!

I think Anne's summed it up beautifully! Many think a western saddle's like a bra or a shoe ~ one size fits all. Well, not quite.

I got a lovely Cattleman western saddle fitted for Sabina this week- pictures once I'm no longer housebound. It's so comfortable and lined in calf leather so it looks very smart. Hopefully she'l look goo din the ring next year with this on. This one, Continental Equiflex short and wide is ideal for natives and we will use it on Louis when he goes for a western clinic in October.

Very nice looking saddle. I must take a pic of Daisy in her PINK western saddle.

I ride my arab western quite often. Hes 14-14.3hh (were not sure exactly what size he is, need to get a measuring stick) hes short backed and has no withers. His saddle is a full sized square shaped saddle. Fits him perfect.
Phil also has a western saddle thats full size and square shaped. Different make to mine and is too big for khan.
