Day 3! Out with Sue and her friends but NO CLAIRE!!!!! Had to harness up all on my own...arrgghh!! Not sure I got the breeching strap quite right but it worked! Amy was absolutely fabulous yet again. She only had a walker for the first 2 minutes, then Sue got on with me. Sam did great traffic controlling (I'd forgotten everyone goes out on New Year's Day!) We met cars, loads of walkers, dogs galore, bicycles, etc and she was as good as gold! And I didn't do anything stupid today either!! Off we go, 2 up!  How embarrassing having to go out with THEM behind!  Passenger's eye view!  Weeheeee!! Going home!   Can I go out with my mates now, please?  The good news for you is I'm back to work tomorrow, so you won't have to make anymore polite remarks until next weekend! I think little Amy has done fantastically and deserves a few days off too! Happy New Year to everyone!  |

The big question now is do I want the cart pillarbox red or bright yellow??
We've abandoned the green idea as it's better to be seen (not that you can miss us as some kind soul pointed out! LOL!) and Steve has red or yellow paint!
Perhaps I should do a poll?! Or maybe ask Claire & co what they prefer?!!
I do get the feeling that Amy is wishing we would quietly vanish! Difficult to see a black pony blushing!!! But I can see the "they're not with me" bubble!

I'm going to miss seeing Amy's day by day progress, she's been positively FAB!!!! Knock on wood (Lol) And I don't know who's been doing all these photos, but I love them!!!
I've only ever been driving once, and that was the thrill of my life with Lorraine and Wolsey Master Oliver. So getting to see Amy's progress in the cart has been truly interesting.
Bless her heart, she does look a bit embarrassed by all the glowing L plates and Caution Young Horse ~ but I think they're brilliant!! Personally I'd go with yellow over red paint, because at night, the red is seen as black/dark by the human eye. Whereas yellow seems to stand out just that bit longer in the gloom.

Good point on the yellow better for eyes in low light, Debbie! Thank you. We had been tending to red (looks better with black ponies!) but being seen is the most important issue for me (not that we're inconspicious currently!!!)
I'm not sure if Amy looked pleased or miffed she'd missed an outing today! LOL! Isaac is certainly miffed he's missing out on something!
Oh yes, Gill, work was pants today!!

I think red would look very smart and the colour I would tend towards, but yellow would show up more and be safer. How about red with some yellow stripes on the back? LOL!

Amy is indeed a super star! Look how relaxed she looks, like it's no big deal. Could she have a talk with Knight please and give him some of that attitude? He's not near as charitable about the cart. But then I've noticed Amy is doing great with no blinders & he hates them, so maybe I should try without. I'm with Linda about the color, agree I'd like red for looks but yellow is probably more visable & so the best for safety. I like that Linda, red with yellow racing stripes?

I don't know if I agree with binkers or not! Amy doesn't need them when out riding so why would she need them driving? I think the logic is so she's not scared by the cart behind her, but I'd rather she had been introduced to the cart and was okay with it than hide her from it! Also, she can still see me if I sit to one side which I think gives her confidence.
Some horses have cauliflowers in their eyes (don't know the vet name!) which makes them more spooky/inclined to shy, and these might be better with blinkers? Mind, I think you are asking a horse to trust you a huge amount as you are taking all its control of its own safety from it? I'll let you know how I get on with Vanty when we have a go with him!
Perhaps Knight needs things breaking down into smaller steps? I used bridge and target training with Amy which meant I told her every thing that was happening and she got lots of treats for coping! My Dales' stomachs can overcome everything else! LOL!
Keep us posted how you get on.

I do think you're right that atleast for driving Knight will do better if I break it down into tiny steps. Surely it won't seem so scary in little bits. And so right about treats, I think he'd put up with absolutely anything for enough food. I guess since he took to being ridden so quickly and never batted an eye about anything I thought it would be the same for him about driving, but apparently not. Love the idea of having a walker or two at first to reassure him.
It will be fun to see Amy as she continues to progress, she looks to be having as much fun as you are.
