ohhh errrr Had a real fight with my mum who is a complete control freak over cooking, especially for something important occassions. (The reason I can't cook is because every time I try Mum will come in and go "Oh no you don't do it like that - do it like this" barges me out of the way and does it all for me...) So anyway Dad and I pointed out that even a REALLY bad cake from me would be better than NO cake (which was the other option). SO I now have to find a real noddy recipe for me to follow. I think I'll either go for Delia (as her food is always good and I know i can follow her recipes) or Mary Berry (as I don't then need to worry about what gas mark something is in an AGA!!!) I'll let you know on the 29th if it turned out OK.... Olivia

I think its a Christmas cake, Anne. Best of luck, Olivia I hear ya with the bargy mum that won't let you cook. Not that I ever went out of my way to do so LOL I do find the cake mixes in the store work up well. Just follow the instructions strictly, and they come out fairly nice. I made one last year that was a strawberry cake, and I added marachino cherries to the mix.....ooooh, that came out gooey and positively scrumptious!! ...nuts, now I'm drooling with no cake in the house. Alternately, anything with chocolate is bound to be a hit You'll have to let us know how it goes.

Olivia - I've got an easy, peasy fab fruit cake recipe that I use as a Christmas Cake......not very traditional, but it's really nice and with some brandy soaked into it is even more yummy.
Let me know if you want it.....I think it's a Delia though, so you've probably already got it.

LOL Olivia, your Mum sounds like mine. We were never allowed to do anything in the kitchen either but it must have all gone in my head because I find myself cooking the same things she did, and my grandmothers too.
yes, the Delia recipe should be easy and is bound to come out well. Good luck!

I've got a good Christmas cake recipe, it's not Delia or Mary Berry it's a Stork one I've been using it since I was at school ;D, I think Chritmas cake is easy as there is so much fruit in it there is no chance of it sinking lol Let me know if you'd like the recipe, oh and the size of cake you want to make

I always cook mine inside a biscuit tin in the bottom oven of the aga Olivia. It turns out dead dark and moist then.

Ooooh some great tips here - thanks guys!!!
And yes please!!!!!!!! to people offering me yummy recipes - the more the merrier. I can then go through them all and work out which one I'm less likely to mess up!!!
Anne - I did try to write Chirstmas cake in the title - but I didn't have enough letters that way, so I had to go with an abbreviation - and I have a quite random hate of the word xmas LOL

Well having been my usual disorganised self!!!! I've STILL not made this.
So I'm going with a Stollen as I can do that next weekend. I'm even going to make the marzipan myself.
I hope it turns out OK as I love really good Stollen

Nooo, as I seem to remember you went to extremes to not have to cook for me. I'm not that hard to appease, really! Besides, some of the best times I've had have been round a 'disastrous' food fiasco. They still turned out yummy even if the chefs didn't think so
