I started with another cold on Saturday (2nd in a month! Grrrrrr) and it's developed into a horrible, tickly hacking cough. I can't stop it and it's making me sick too..... I've got Benylin dry cough syrup, but it's useless. Anyone got any other recommendations?

You have my sympathies! My cold developed into a cough (and the MOTHER of all coldsores on my face ) and none of the cough syrups touch it. I look like I've not slept for a week (cause I barely have) and because of the cold sore I can't even disguise it with make up. My mum used to make this REALLY evil recipe with onions, black mollasses syrup and other weird ingredients which had to be left to stew in the airing cupboard for 24hrs before you took it. It was GRIM! Personally I think it was nothing to do with a cure, more that if you were prepared to take it then you were genuinely ill and were allowed time off school/drs visit which often speeded up recovery!

Sue, Fishermans friends are the best to stop coughing! I know I keep banging on about them but they really do work.

It sounds really strange, but I read someone using Vicks VapoRub rubbed on their children's feet to stop the coughing. Apparently the poor child was down with almost pneumonia, and wasn't able to sleep. They were at wit's end when told to do this and the child conked out after maybe five minutes. But it might be worth a try.

My Grandpa used to swear by them Sue and when I had one of those coughs you feel like your organs are being coughed out I tried them and stopped coughing almost instantly!

It doesn't surprise me, Debbie. I was once recommended to rub lavendar oil on my feet when I couldn't sleep and it did help - I think the feet absorb the properties better than other areas of the body - Linda would know.
I'm going to empty the chemist shop tomorrow - Vicks and fishermen's friends! LOL

Can't believe you have another cough Sue - and also can't believe I haven't caught anything YET!!!!!!!!!
Let us know if FFs works - I've never found anything to be effective for a cough.
Hope you don't suffer for too long!

I just read in the Mail today that the best remedy for coughs is good old honey! Apparently it outperformed all the over the counter stuff when taken before bedtime. Not sure if that is neat, or in a drink!

Well, I have been drinking the honey, lemon and ginger concoction I made up and it is good, but didn't stop me coughing. I guess maybe a spoonful of honey would do the trick....
FFs are DISGUSTING!!! LOL But they do work! So thanks Bev. Not sure the fisherman will want to come anywhere near me while I'm sucking his friend because they smell horrid too (well, they must do because I can hardly smell anything - but I can smell these).
A friend also recommended pholcodeine (sp) which you have to buy at the chemist - so I got some of that too.
Surely the cough can't hold out against all that lot! LOL I'm knackered 'cos can't sleep for coughing, can hardly talk and am deaf as a post too.....I SAID I'M DEAF AS A POST!! LOL

Are you coughing from a sinus drain, or is it in your lungs Sue?

It was a really dry cough, Debbie. My head is just bunged up now, but I feel much better.
Looking forward to being able to taste food again - and smell it cooking!
