Oh, Katie's simply gorgeous and rescue dogs of all any kind are just the best, to me anyway. I've met several rehomed greyhounds & every one was just delightful. The regional rescues didn't think I was a suitable candidate for one with the hours I spend on the road for work but maybe someday, they are really special.

Oh she's beautiful! She sounds to be settlling into your home routine amazingly quickly - it must be quite a culture shock after living in a kennel environment. She is a real gem!

She is lovely, I am so glad she has such a lovely home for her retirement. A friend always has retired greyhounds and they are smashing pets.

Oh I sympathise with the hunting instinct thing! I have to keep a close eye on Scruff in that department!
She is lovely and I'm so glad your Mum has chosen to adopt a dog to help her get better. How fortunate for Katie too! My cousin has adopted two greyhounds and I was surprised to realise just how little exercise they needed. I always imagined they would need an awful lot but that's just not the case. The only problem Lorna has had is with their teeth. Something about the diet they are given when racing is not good for their teeth? Just about everyone you talk to that has a rescued greyhound is VERY enthusiastic about them. Hope you will all be very happy together and that both your Mum and Katie thrive on the mutual arrangement!

We have two retired greyhound girls. Both were born and raced in Ireland and then saved from the pound, which basically mean death, by English rescue centres. Ella is now nearly 13 and Flossie-Jo is 8. They are loving, laid back, gentle girls who have given us years of fun and happiness! Both had a very strong chase instinct when we first rehomed them, but within 3 months they were "reformed characters" and now even allow our chickens and ducks to walk right over the top of them! Unfortunately, they do still chase cats and rabbits. I think greyhounds are the easiest breed of dog to own. Contrary to popular opinion, they don't need lots of exercise - they prefer sofa-surfing and thus make great pets for people who work and have to leave a dog in the home for a longer period than would be ideal for many other breeds. They rarely have any health problems and are usually fantastic with kids. Over 70% of all dogs in Rescue Centres are greyhounds/lurchers, and thousands more are PTS at the end of their racing careers which can be as young as 2 or 3 years of age ( just babies!) So please, please, please consider rehoming one of these wonderful dogs. They're out there patiently waiting for their FOREVER homes........ Helen

Another fan. We had a retired greyhound years ago and he shared the house with cats. In fact we rescued a cat that had kittens and he even stood and wimpered while 4 kittens climbed up his legs! And our other cat definately ruled him. We were able to let him off the lead after a short while, and the only thing we had problems with was that he was scared of feet...so wonder if he had been kicked in kennels. If we moved our feet near him when he was laying down he would panic and jump up. He was a super dog, and one of the great joys was seeing how they react to seeing another greyhound when out....he used to go totally balistic with excitement.
Katie looks absolutely gorgeous, and the sleeping photo is so very typical...lol

Katie is lovely. I have a black Whippet (Jack) and a blondehound (she is a bright apricot greyhound) who was bred and raced by my parents postie. Last August I asked if he knew anyone who had any greyhounds for rehoming he said he had two 5 year olds going on the Monday - we collected Gem on the Sunday. She has just learnt to play with toys - the squeaky ones make her leap in the air. She is not 100% off lead and we have a lot of Deer etc around here so she stays on lead (as does the Hare hunting Whippet - who is old enough to know better) and she is fine. She is a bird hunter although she has never shown any interest in the hens She is fine with small dogs so long as they dont bother her. She does regularly try and pull my partners collie dogs head off though. Greyhounds are fabulous pets and I would always recommend them and as I say Katie is very beautiful!

Thank you everyone for your lovely posts! It is so lovely to hear about your dogs, I see a glimmer of Katie in many of them! Nativerider - squeaky toys make Katie leap in the air with excitement too!!! and zoom round and round the tree in our garden, she is so funny! I think I might have a video somewhere! If only everyone knew what lovely pets Greys and lurchers make!!! I make it my mission to tell everyone I meet how brilliant they are!

I have some videos of Gem playing with her favorite toys on my mobile but I am not sure how to get them on to here. She like Katie has has her zooms around the garden - she does the bum down tail between legs and charge! Does Katie put her ears straight up? Gem does this - she and Jack have very "active" ears.
At the moment they are having a snooze under my desk at work - Gems day is made up of meeting and greeting people when they come in to the office and mugging the postman for biscuits! Is Katie ear marked? When I got Gem I decided to have a look at her history and found I had actually met her father when I got Jack from a Greyhound kennels Chelmsford in Essex before Gem was born, Gem was bred in Wiltshire.

Katie does have very active ears, although they tend only to go straight up when she hears a particularly good sound! As an Irish bred racing dog, yes, she has tattoos in both her ears, as opposed to just one as most English racers We traced her history using her ear marks and found she has run in over 30 races, won a few but mostly did not do particularly well. Your Gem sounds like a real poppet! I imagine she is a lovely colour! Katie is still scared of the postman when she is in the house, he does make an awful clattering noise! although when she meets him in the street, he is not so bad ;D
