I am late reading post and for that I apologize. Things are very hectic here.
We let all of our mares foal out of the barn but in a paddock away from the other horses so that we can be there to assist and mother and foal can have "private" time.
I have had bad experiences both in foaling in the barn, and when amongst other mares. Foals can get caught in corners or bumped if inside, but in a herd, they can be run down as well.
