Good grief!! I think for that money, you could just let her have a fling in the field.... What I don't understand is that AI is exceedingly 'old technology'. I mean, the vets came up with this back in the 1930s, so why is it so difficult to find a vet capable of doing AI nowadays?? It seems a sad change in the times that we seem to have gone backwards with this technique.

Greydales - yes, vet comes here. One of the reasons we went for AI is so she didn't have to go off to a strange place, in a field full of strange horses, so sending her to an AI centre would make no sense, although there is one near here.
There was a list of vets approved to do AI in Horse and Hound 2 weeks ago. I will have a look and see if there was anyone in your area.
Debbie - I don't think it is because vets aren't capable of doing AI. The reason some vets don't want to get involved is because the mare can decide to ovulate at weekends or anti-social hours, and they like easy money, but to give ours his due (not something I often do) he seemed quite keen and interested.
David spent all day today tracking down a top up of liquid nitrogen, as the couriers don't like there to be much in the flask (slight risk of explosion) and the semen will have to be stored for longer than expected. Finally managed to get some, BOC, if anyone else ever needs some. Flask is now full to overflowing, so semen should be fine.
This is all very good for us, as we want to start AI'ing our own cattle (Genus are worse than useless these days and our bulls always seem to get a bit nasty).

I'm certainly happy to hear your own vet is game for this. Yes, it does seem to be a matter of easy $$ for the vets. I mentioned AI the cattle to my dad, but in his area NONE of the vets are even remotely interested. They all say just buy in a bull, run it with the cows and sell at the next auction. Sounds like a great way to introduce all sorts of infections if you ask me...
