Turner way of doing the tail ribbons! With many thanks to Shiatsudales for sorting the images out. These instructions and images are from LancsLass and nothing to do with shiatsudales. Lancslass deserves all the credit, I just had the time to move it over from the old board. This is easy to do once you have done it once and very effective. Take a piece of hair from either side at the top of the tail, as you would when plaiting. Join together with an elastic plaiting band. you can stitch it if you prefer, but it is time consuming and the effect is no different to that done with the bands. Plait approx 3 - 4 inches in length, leaving enough hair spare at the end of the plait. Secure the plait with a band. Take hold of the plait and loop it upwards. Feed the end of the plait back thru itself at the top. Take hold of the end of the plait once through and just pull enough through so that you cannot see the plaiting band. You will now have formed a loop Secure the base of the loop with a band. You should now have a bun. Then all you need to do is tie in the ribbons. In my (LancsLass)opinion, different widths of ribbons suit different ponies, ie. a youngster will be better with the thinner ribbons as in the pics, where as an older pony with a chunkier "bum" suits the wider ribbons. Happy ribbon tying folks! Hope this helps. Photos courtesy of Poppys Bott!

I know, there's quite a few things I'd like to save on here before the old Dalesfans goes into the sunset... your tail ribbon pics for one... And what about peeps Remembrances? I think it would be better if we can just import them without people having to redo the posts...

What happened to the photos though? Much better to see them as it makes it easier for people like me that that haven't done it before.

Claire here - use whatever colour ribbons you want, red white and blue are championship colours which we very modestly adopted for Abdylane Nancy, then continued it with Peter and the others. Any colour signifies Dales.

No not at all, we do most of the time but maybe if running late etc we won't bother especially if its a Dales only class. They are traditional but not compulosary. They are however, a v.useful indicator to judges that should know better what breed your holding/riding.
We use brown/brown checked after getting fed up with our ponies of being accused of being kickers one time too many by the ignorant after using the traditional and most commonly used red/white/blue. It also has the added bonus of making us v.distinctive.

Traditionally red and white or blue and white. If your being very fussy they shouldn't be much longer than 4-6 inches. The reason Dales ponies wear them comes from the days when the worked on farms and had short tails, the ribbons were a way to dress them up.
