I have done 3 competitions at our yard so far thinking the more I did the more I would improve with practice but in reality my nerves have slowly got worse and worse and when I did the last test a month or so ago, I ended up in tears feeling as if my body had sort of gone numb I have somehow ended up entering another dressage competition at the yard on Saturday doing Prelim 7 to make up numbers and I haven't even learnt the test yet!! Wish me luck that I can hold things together this time. I have no idea why I get so nervous. Any tips on keeping the nerves under control, gratefully received ;D

Very best of luck Alison, I think some people on here have recommended Bach's rescue remedy for nerves. I haven't tried it but will do next time I have to do a driving class.
I hope you do well, don't forget to post some pics.

Best of luck i am sure you are going to be fine. I have been through prelim 7 in my lesson and it is a really nice test. I am currently being bullied into doing a dressage test, it seemed a really good idea a few months ago, but as it gets closer the idea, really isn't seeming the best, LOL. Don't worry i am nervous as well, Rescue remedy is really good, try to laugh and smile lots i think that helps sometimes, and just keep yourself really busy until Saturday, so hopefully you don't think about it much. Best of luck

Prelim 7 is a lovely test - honestly! It just seems to flow!
I get very nervous in the test, I end up talking to myself in my head!! LOL But at least I know what I mean!! LOL
No tips I'm afraid - apart from keep breathing! When I finished one a while ago I was absolutely stunned that I was gasping for air!! And I never look at the spectators! They really put me off!!

Now then Alison, dont you do a me!!!!! ;D You will both be fine, you are just going for a hack in a smaller area!!! Rescue remedy does help, I used it yesterday for my lesson in the field and numerous other times. Not sure how it works but it is brandy based!!!!! Why not get someone to call the test then at least you wont have that worry, afterall, you do it for everyone else! Remember that if one movement goes pear shaped, it is only one chunk of marks, collect yourself together and make the most of the other movements. Free walk has double points and Bill is brilliant at that! Good luck!! You really will be fine.........Prommise!!!!!!

Thanks everyone ;D I have had a quick look at the test now and feel a bit better about things. You are right Khristyne, Bill likes his free walk, so hopefully at least that bit will go ok. I think it's just the canter bit more than anything but I suppose I could go H/C. I don't have a digi camera but I will let you all know how it goes ;D
Thanks again

Good Luck and try to smile!

Well done for having a go, you certainly are not alone in suffering with nerves! I think it's the competitive aspect of it which makes people worry, and maybe the thought of being 'watched' - but I try not to think of it as competing and more as experience for myself and my pony. Things rarely go perfectly and even the best trained horse can have an off day or spook!
P7 is a very nice test with no awkward bits. Hope you manage to enjoy it!

Go for it Alison, go HC if you prefer or just trot the canters if thats bothering you. You are a good enough rider and I know you can do it. We will all have everything crossed for you!

Best of luck for saturday, go for it. Most riders suffer from nerves me included, and I just try to relax, breathe and ignore everyone else, think positive (I know this is hard) you can do this, and if a mistake is made, keep calm just carry on and pretend it didn't happen. Fingers crossed and have fun.
