I have entered for my first one day event this coming thursday, and the nerves have already kicked in! I dont even know the dressage test yet :S Saw the height of the xc jumps today, there not too big but some of them are really scary so i will probably end up on the floor like usual lol. Although the new treeless saddle seems to be saving me lately. unluckily i cant use that on thursday! The good thing is you don't get disqualified for falling off in cross country lol. Anyone got any tips for overcoming the nerves? Fran

All the best of luck!! I remember the first one I did with Amber scary stuff. It doesnt get any easier either. What I have found is not to walk the course too thoroughly! Honestly the longer you stand looking at the fences the worse they seem. Have a quick walk round to know where you are going and leave it at that. Not what the pros would say but a fence is much scarier when your standing on the floor looking at it and that passes to your horse. Ride at everything like your life depends on it and if you dont usually ride with a martingale put one on that neck strap is a lifesaver! I always keep my fingers hooked in mine! Take a deep breath before you go through the start gates and talk to your pony all the way round it keeps you breathing even if its just telling them which direction to go! I have always done my SJ before the XC at most ODE's but if yours is after remember to collect him up in the collecting ring and do a few walk to canter transisitons to get him on his hocks. They are often a bit yipee doo after the XC and they really have to think about SJ as they knock down so easy. As for the dressage well I can offer you no pearls of wisdom there if I can keep Ambers head from up my nose I consider myself very fortunate!
Good Luck and make sure you let us know how you get on.

Wow...thats very brave! I've not done anything as big as that before. But when Jay and I did our first hunter trial I was really nervous because I didn't know what to expect. It didn't help when we were running really late due to transport problems that morning!
Re. the nerves - I'd just make sure you're well prepared. Make sure you've got everything you need all ready the night before and get learning that dressage test! lol. Then on the morning, just leave in plenty of time to allow for any travel hold-ups. I've heard that 'Rescue Remedy' is very good, though I've not tried it myself yet.
Good luck, and have a great day!

Thats a good tip of Daftmare's about the neck strap. I have a hunting breastplate which I only ever put on Jay if we're doing XC jumps. At the hunter trial I needed it because we did our first ever ditch and he had to give it 'extra clearance' just in case something jumped out to get him!

Best of luck, Fran! You and Sam will be just fine! Think positive and you'll fly those jumps! The breastplate does sound a good idea too. Do let us know how you get on.

;DWoohoo!! I got 5th!! Yay!!! We got 63% at dressage and that was with sam in a rushing, unsteady mood and me loosing a stirrup in canter. We got 4 faults in the jumping but only because he got way too excited and so had to turn a circle to make the jump crossing the tracks and in xc we only had one stop at a big scary coffin jump but with more leg we cleared it easy!!And i didnt fall off!!!! I am soooo pleased with sam and am definately more confident about the one in 2 weeks! more time to work on dressage aswell!! Got a nice pink rossette aswell so extra happy Fran

Very well done, Fran! That's brilliant! And it's only your first attempt with Sam, so I think that's excellent. So glad you enjoyed it!
