Rachel, if a horse is forced to walk home, for instance, their muscles can go completely into spasm and they would be exceptionally sore, lame and possibly worse. Sometimes they need a muscle relaxant in bad cases.
The bloods will tell you if Marley has tied up . More sophisticated tests can be taken to determine the effect on muscles while working (but vet is unlikely to order these if it is a one off).
My son and his girlfriend have their horses in Sheffield.

Mercy rache, what a trauma! so glad he has recovered and I hope your vet can go through things with you. don't let him/her go until you understand everything and have asked all your questions - write them down if it helps you to remember.

oh no poor marley. hope he is now back to his old self. No I certainly wouldn't have wanted to try and get him back without a box- I should think the river is fairly deep this time of year too- from what I can remember. Off topic but it is always nice to hear about your rides, takes me back to when I was at clough and makes me have a little smile to myself.

Just wondering what the vet's said regarding Marley? Did she have an idea what might have triggered it? What a fright I think its when these things hit out of the blue that its the worst.

Signs vary widely depending on the extent of muscle damage.
Mild cases simply involve stiffness and shuffling hindlimb gait. There may be pain over the gluteal muscles (hindquarters). This form is more common in horses receiving only small amounts of exercise. Some cases are a result of stressful triggering factors. This is common in younger horses and will often have a behavioural component. In some very mild cases, poor performance is the only manifestation of the disease. Severe cases may include signs of severe pain with sweating, increased pulse rate, increased respiration rate and reluctance to move. There may be hard and painful locomotor muscles, red urine (due to the presence of muscle breakdown products) and even recumbency. This often transpires in horses during endurance training where significant fluid and electrolyte alterations occur.

But does the vet know what could have triggered it?? = How on earth to prevent this from happening again? ?

sorry missed a bit of the message DOH blonde moment!
Vet suggested riding Marley for 10 minutes everyday rather than an hour or so at weekends and to cut feed right down. Rachel has not been well, so hasn't been able to do anything withj Marley this week though.

hello hello hello !!!!
asta la vista baby!!!
marley....thanks clair!!...the vet said to try and ride 10 mins each day rather than twice a week for a longer ride...guessin the vet doesnt have her own horse!!!and to just feed as little as poss and said a token gesture of nuts, chaff and a taste of sugar beet is fine....and thats its to be put down as one of those things! all his blood tests were fine otherwise...so pretty inconclusive really...i must say given that im only just getting my confidence back im feeling very nervous about riding...i doubt i will get to ride this weekend..
yep ive had the dreaded tooth abcess again, only much worse this time,so back on antibiotics and as many pain killers as am allowed...and ive been off work all week which i really hate, you feel like your playing truent!.....
and yes debbie what a week! inbetween hugging a hot water bottle to my face! ive been worried to death about donald getting home safely what with the bombings at kandahar but hes homeeeeee yippeeeeeee....safe and sound,a little jet lagged and overraught,i think all of his friends have come home from uni to see him,so as i type im sat here now waiting for him to stagger in from a night club,no doubt very very drunk!!!!all 3 of the kids have been out together tonight!!what a worry....bets back in safe and sound, just matt and donald not accounted for!....we have managed in this week to finish 3 bedrooms shuffle everyone round,so donald had for the first time in this house a bed and a bedroom!! beds delivered, carpets fitted, decorated, furnished!!! well not quite bethany is still living out of boxes!!!and of course our room hasnt been touched yet!3 weeks ago the loft hadnt even got a floor!...am guessing the builder will go on a go slow now!!! anyway i feel so very relieved hes back,we have masses of family visits to do now,and lots of stories and hundreds of pics!so back to a full house!and an empty fridge, just how its meant to be!!!big sighs of relief....

That sounds like quite a week, Rachel. I hope you feel better soon and that you enjoy have Donald at home.
Did your vet prescribe anything? Mine prescribed Visorbin once to me when a similar thing happened. You can buy it at saddlers as well as via the vet.
