We had it on our yard Jo. Thankfully Bobs didnt get it and he was sharing the same stable block as the only one on the yard who had it. The rest were living out and there was a fair few that had it. Bobs shared a field with 3 ponies who had it before we knew too.
Swabs took about 10 days to come back and it was said it was a mild strain of strangles. Dont forget to clean out shared water troughs too as the bacterium can live longer in water. Hope D doesnt get it, in saying that its a pain when you cant leave the yard until its cleared too.

Well- it was confirmed yesterday as strangles.
So just hoping that it passes me by!
Dancer had snot on Sunday - but havent seen any since. he is still eating like a pig as well! When he starts to go off his food, I will know!
Thanks for all your support guys!
Out of interest-we have a bridleway that runs behind where we are - and the horses are grazed in fields either side - should anyone be notified that strangles is there? Whos responsibility is it?

Thanks for posting Jo...and I've got everything crossed that Dancer doesn't get it.
Dunno the answer to your question, but word of mouth will spread the news. I was thinking about doing the dressage at East Farm on Sunday, but probably won't now - would rather keep Bea on the yard away from any chance of infection.

Oh dear , I hope Dancer stays well I don't know about notifying anyone, is strangles a notifiable disease maybe it's something for the council if the bridle path is their responsibility

Oh no, what a pain! Fingers crossed Dancer manages to avoid it but at least now you know, you can keep an extra close eye on him and will catch it at the earliest stage. Might be worth keeping an eye on his temperature as a guide?
Strangles isn't a notifialbe disease and, as Sue says, word will spread round quickly. It wouldn't hurt to put a notice on the bridleway just to placate other riders but it shouldn't be a danger to passing horses. Presumeabley birds and other animals could spread the bacteria anyway via water troughs etc?

Hi there, just joined the forum. We have a Fell and a Dales. Last year we were unlucky to get strangles. We managed to contain it and out of 15 horses only 4 caught it. We caught it through a dealer bringing an infected horse to the next farm. It was horrible and very worrying but luckily we got through it. Good luck

Well, it is still looking good - fingers crossed! The contaminated ones - 3 have all been moved away from our guys to another field and set of stables the were due to be knocked down - but now put on hold!!! Dancer still seems fine - troffing his way through feed etc. I need to get a thermometer and check his temp as that is one thing I dont own! We are just finishing our 1st out of 3 week quarantine stage and no one else seems to be showing symptoms. I just hope people dont become complacant towards the end of the quarantine!

It should be something that I would think people would want to know.
I really hope he stays well.

Ironically that's the one thing I did own when Blossom arrived! Good thing too as she came down with a form of shipping fever once she arrived.
LOL, I have to say, D doesn't look fussed one bit, does he? But these fevers/diseases hit like lightning. Totally fine one minute, and quivery on the legs the next. Fingers seriously crossed the whole thing passes him by!!!
