*Don't read this if you're squeamish or eating your breakfast I didn't want to post because I was so worried I'd jinx him coming back home. To be completely honest, I did feel as the new wound was in the armpit that we would have to take him back to the vet to get this all chased away. We've had a long holiday weekend here (everyone else on holiday, but we were solid at work) and 2 nights ago I thought his injured leg looked puffy again. Then Monday he put his weight on that foot and the pus leaked from the wound So at the vet clinic, the vet removed the scabs from the wounds and it wasn't healing quite as well as I had hoped. Worse, he found where the pus had drained and created a new pocket behind the armpit so essentially this thing is tracking down his body. We've left him there to have it lanced and the wounds reflushed once more. At least Mister got to have some time at home, and I think he's regained some weight and certainly recharged his batteries. All of us feel he's capable of fighting this and the vet is willing, so we'll perservere. Mister hasn't shown any signs of giving up, which is the most important part. So long as he wants to fight it, we'll be giving him the best chance of getting this cleared up.

all of us were really bummed out at how badly it had backslid. About the only positive part was the fact the original wound did look like it was mending. At least there didn't seem to be pus there. That gives hope that it could still have a chance to get cleared all the way up. I can't believe this abcess though I know we have some very nasty things in the soil here, especially from 3 years of flooding, but whatever got into Mister's wound is horribly resistant and very agressive in its growth

So very sorry to hear this Debbie, especially when he looked like he was on the mend. Sending all of my strongest vibes that you and he can fight this together, so he makes a full recovery.
Sounds like you've got a good team at your vets, they're giving him the best chance.

oh what a shame, I so hope that he continues to fight this - he sounds like a fighter, and your vets sound like they are doing the best they can too - fingers crossed this all improves soon.

MANY thanks for the continuing positive vibes Phoned this morning and suggested we get a culture started on this abcess. Yesterday it got dismissed, but I feel its important at this stage to know what it is we're up against. If we can narrow down what's causing the infection, we can get a better match with the antibiotics. So long as Mister says he wants to stick around, all of us will be giving him the best chance at getting this cleared up once and for all. I'm so glad the vet team is still positive they can get rid of it.

Oh no, poor, brave Mister. I really hope they zap this bug completely now and sending lots of hugs for you too. Interesting what you say about the flooded land. Our bottom paddock floods regularly and it does make me wonder.............

Thanks everyone! We stopped in to visit Mister today. He's not happy because the cat isolation place is now full up with kittens, kittens, a mother cat and her litter and a very grumpy puss who's mother's away on holiday and she boards her cat there. He's been given a bigger kennel which is nice, and once more I am so glad he's had his vaccines all his life because the littlest kitten looks like she's come down with rhino already that stuff spreads like wildfire. I'm knocking on wood Mister's vaccines will either keep him from catching it at all, or at least make it a smaller infection. In the meantime, the vet did send away two different cultures and we're waiting for the results. The vet has been flushing the wounds daily and today they were going to flush it all with chlorhexidine (I've probably spelled that incorrectly). Its a good all around disinfectant and fairly decent to use for wound washing so long as it's diluted to prevent harming the tissues. Mister was able to come over to me 3 legged and I held his food dish and then water for him and was very pleased to see his tongue colour was still very good. Baseline (KNOCK ON WOOD!) he's still doing well. He's tired, but resigned. The vet and the team still feel confident this will heal, but as we all know it will take time. I'm very hopeful the test results will come back and give us good feedback on the antibiotics the vet should use to treat this once and for all. I told them about the non stop rains and they were shocked. Even these past 2 days, our area's gotten rain and they haven't had rain in weeks, probably months. Since he's an outdoor cat who loves to roll in the mud/mold/GawdKnowsWhat!, there could be anything in that shoulder wound
