how exciting!!! Gem's a lucky girlie to get to come live with you will she eventually go live with everyone together, or do you think you'll do a 'girls' field/boys' field'? Congratulations on your newest addition

Plans are to get her going under saddle, and yes all together as soon as possible. Though I am a bit worried as she is so overweight at the moment that she will do herself damage being chased, also she will need to shift a lot of weight before we can get a saddle to fit

Gem is 7,she is Swayfield Ben x Waterside Samantha.
She has done nothing Gill bought her to breed from but didn't, so she needs to be backed but I am rather worried about the huge fat pads on he shoulders and the fact that you can also see her ribs, I really want to get some mag ox and agnus castus into her but she wont eat any feed - I know it's early days as she hasn't had bucket feeds in the past.
I would love to ride her but like Gem I'm far to heavy lol

Emerald wouldn't eat any bucket feed when she first came to me, I'm sure she'd never had any and thought I was trying to poison her. I usually feed all fibre, unmolassed sugar beet, alfalfa nuts and chaff, but she would't touch it so I tried her with a little bit of the course mix, while Em was at my daughters yard for 2 nights enroute home, she had at the time for her TB with gut problems, Sarencen Relive. It's got no cereal in it just fibre and peas and beans, it is molassed so it's sticky and I assume tasty and smells nice, and she decided to try a few mouthfuls, so once home, I started her on small amounts of that and built it up until there was enough to put supplements in, then by the time we got to the second bag I started to mix a little soaked sugar beet in with it, not too much or she wouldn't eat it and very gradually increased the beet and decreased the course mix until she was on just the beet then introduced the alfalfa nuts as well. I had to be really careful about not mixing it too wet which she hated, it had to be just moist and crumbly, and introduce supplements carefully one at a time and just tiny amounts first. Even when she was eating well just the addition of one tiny piece of carrot or apple would have her leaving the whole feed. She will now eat whatever is put in front of her.
When she is eating and you can get stuff into her, one thing I found really useful with Spud, who came to me almost 100kg over weight and even when he'd dropped the excess weight still had huge fat pads behind his shoulders and a huge crest, was Simple Systems Metaslim. It's not cheap and he had 2 bags (3 months) but it did the trick and got rid of the fat pads and reduced the crest.
Zelda in the photos I've seen you certainly don't look too heavy to ride a Dales.

I always found Happy Hoof a palatable feed for a fussy Eater. Thankfully never had to use anything like meta slim, but Sigs was fat when I bought him and had to lose about 70kg over a period of time. Soaked hay to reduce sugar and a low sugar chaff with a. Good mineral did the trick for us and the vet was very pleased.- as were my hips lol.
Years ago I did use the SS balancer. Initially they hated the taste, but once they got used to it they did very well on it as I think they do good stuff.
