I can only insure James for accidents. I can no longer insure for vet's fees in the event of sickness.

I don't insure my oldies, even for death as it's for accident only and there's not much risk of them having an accident in the field. Having seven I just can't afford it and only insure Saturn for vets' fees as he's the one I ride most. The others are insured for death by accident/illness.
When Dan turned 15 his insurance nearly doubled, which I thought ludicrous!

Jenny isn't insured, I don't think they would touch her!! Apollo is 19 this year and insured for accident only. As long as he is ridden I will carry on, given his panic attacks about large traffic!

Yes, it does seem daft that it is hard to insure older ponies/horses. At one time 12 was considered to be old but today many horses are healthy and in full work way into their 20s and more! I never even attempted to get Winnie insured when I took him on at aged 26 (he is now 34). Quest was always fully insured from when I got him aged 10 but that all stopped when he got to 19. Now only Harvey is fully insured.
