Annie had a lesson with a BSJA accredited instructor. Been having real problems stopping Gem, she hates being pulled about and being over bitted, but is so unresponsive so really been difficult for us to try and sort her out. Well the instructor got on and said it was nothing Annie was doing there really was nothing there. So she brought this strange looking nose band out called Kineton (I had never heard of it). Well it was a blooming miracle the mare softened immediately and was so responsive, no throwing her head about went nice and long and low she was just so much happier, and so was Annie, she felt so much more confident as she felt she had control, but felt she didn't have to be heavy handed to control her. I have googled the Kineton and there seems to be mixed feelings on them, some say they are severe others say they are not as you are taking pressure away from the mouth. I know for Gem it is working out kinder as we are not having to over bit her or hank on her to stop her, and you can see she is so much happier in the way she is going, Annie even cantered her across a field which she has been quite nervous to do as she bolted with her before. So we are well chuffed, got our first BSJA registered comp tomorrow so fingers crossed.

Sounds great, I'm glad you've found something that works for Annie and Gem. I'd never thought about trying one of these on Jay before, but I'm very tempted now after reading this success story. Jay hacks out, schools and jumps alone in a kk snaffle, but is EXTREMELY strong and difficult to stop in company. I had been riding him in his rubber pelham in company but I even struggled to hold him in this when we went out hunting.
Do you have any recommendations as to how they should be fitted?
Thanks Ren

Hi, we have lent Annie's instructors for now, but have managed to get one from wwwcotswoldsports.co.uk for £18.00. They are very simple to fit, the metal D shape literally sits just under the bit, you do not want it lifting the bit just sitting underneath it, the nose band sits quite low over the nose, I think there is a piccie on the website as it is quite hard to explain. Annie tried Gem in a rubber pelham with no affect at all. She is now riding her in a happy mouth continental gag on the snaffle ring for schooling and hacking and on 2nd ring for jumping and hacking in company with the Kinieton nose band on all the time. Would be interesting to hear what you think if you try one.

Brilliant, thanks for that. I'll have a look at the link. Will definitely let you know how we get on if I decide to go ahead and try one

I will have a look at it as well. Darn ponies can be strong when they don't want to stop.

Well, we have now hacked Gem, XC schooled (she does not do water) unlike Buzz who loved it, and SJ, and she is absolutely ace in it, Annie said she feels like a totally different horse in it. Must be, as she hasn't let me ride her since the change!, and she looks so much happier in her going, so talk about a success story.

That's brilliant!!!! And Sue, thank you for the extra link I thought I'd heard of it before, but didn't quite remember. ;D Oh yes, they use that for tbs that pull too hard! I'm just glad it gave her a nice comforting way to calm down and pay attention to Anne's aids instead of being confused and dashing about, ruining both their confidences in each other. This looks like a wonderfully huge step forwards in their relationship
