I am buying a new box to transport Sabina, but in order to get one big enough, I have to move away from the 3.5 ton ones. I have just missed out on the Holderness 2 box I wanted, but I now have a choice of a 6 tonne with horse facing forwards, or a 7.5 ton with herringbone travel.
Does anyone transport facing forwards and if so, do you feel it creates more stress than backwards travel (which we have been used to) or herringbone? Thanks

We do, we have a lambourn box which is two forward, then a solid wall and then herringbone for two in the back. We used to have a lorry which was 2 facinng forward and 2 facing backwards.
Ours travel easily all ways, we do tend to put babies and new travellers in the herringbone as in the forward facing section the heads are over a breastbar and there is the risk if one does get in a tiz and goes up it may go over the bar.
but no i don't think it creates more stress going forwards than backwards, most trailers are forward facing.

We travell harvey in a forward facing trailer and it doesn't seem to bother him, but then i don't think we've had him in a herringbone

I have read somewhere that Herringbone or Backwards is better but I can't remember where. James has to put up with being forward facing too.

I've only ever had a forward facing lorry so can't compare with other types. I think if I had the option I'd go for herringbone as they seem to balance better - when I brought Gem home she was loose in the box and when I took a peek at her during a fuel stop she was standing at an angle - then when we arrived she was facing the rear. So don't know which way she preferred, and whether she faced forwards for any of the journey! It's never bothered the others though.

I think they've done all sorts of studies on this and although horses seem to prefer the herringbone, or backwards stance, the evidence wasn't crippling overwhelming that facing forwards put that much more stress on them than travelling backwards or herringbone. I'm sure a forwards facing box will work just fine for what you need, Jacqui

There was an Aussie guy that did research on this (name fails me) and with out doubt backwards is much less stressful than forwards. Will try and find you references.

A friend of mine has studied it too and I think given the choice most horses would prefer to travel facing backwards.

Nancy is best forwards that herringbone which she hates and gets really stressy never tired her backwards though.

Trailers they have to travel forward, but i know when we travel little one loss in the trailer, she always stands in the middle of the trailer and stands backwards and travels very happy like that. So i think through choice they would rather travel backwards.
