Monty came from a small Scottish charity called HORSE who I used to be an inspector for. He needed a new home quickly in 2002 so I said I would take him temporarily - and he's still here.
I think he is Donkey x Exmoor from his colouring and size - he is only about 11 hh. We think he is about 26. I was told he had been used to carry potatoes and I have sat on him (!!) but he has an incredible buck so we don't try it often!!
When I picked him up he was very thin and had scrapes all down the underside of his neck where he had been leaning through a barbed wire fence trying to get grass. We popped him in the box and shut the ramp. I went round to check all the doors and by the time I got to the ramp, his head and one front foot were over the top!!!! Top doors were quickly shut. We left him loose as he was too little to tie safely.
He is a devil who smiles serenely at you as he is being bad, he has the most gentle eyes you have ever seen. He jumps like a stag, can clear a 5 bar gate no problem and hates being left alone. He is a beggar with the farrier and our dances as we try to trim his tiny feet have to be seen to be believed.
He makes a noise that is not quite a bray and not quite a neigh either!!
He adores going for a walk and trots along quite happily, taking it all in. He is very strong though, and uses his shoulder to lever you out of the way!! He has mischievous streak and when he gets very excited he runs round like a mad thing, motorbiking round corners and scooting under the other horses noses.
Apollo HATES him and would kill him given the chance. Harley tolerates him, but Jenny and he are good friends - they lie so close together when they are resting they are almost touching each other.
So he's quite easy to manage as long as he's not on his own, the gates are tall and are very strong!! As he lives with Jenny he always has company and seems pretty content. He is as cheap as chips to keep and I would never part with him.
Some piccies:

His 'fierce' face...
